St. John’s men’s hoops bests UMass
BY ZACHARY GEWELB
The St. John’s men’s basketball
team cruised to a 78-63
tournament victory against
UMass in Connecticut on Sunday
.With the win, the Johnnies
clinched third place in the Air
Force Reserve Hall of Fame
Tip-Off Tournament.
While the final tally shows
a 15-point St. John’s win, the
game was closer than the score
would indicate. In fact, UMass
took a 38-37 lead into halftime,
which marked the first time St.
John’s trailed a game at the half
this season.
The Johnnies started the
game strong, going on a 10-0
run to take a 17-10 lead with
13 minutes remaining in the
opening half. Their lead grew
to 28-20, but the defense allowed
UMass to go on an 11-3 run, giving
the Minutemen a two-point
advantage.
The teams exchanged baskets
for the remainder of the
half and UMass secured a onepoint
lead into intermission.
And after a slow start to the
second half, St. John’s took over
the game.
UMass came out of the
break strong to build a 45-37 advantage,
but St. John’s — led by
David Caraher — clawed their
way back into the game. Caraher
scored seven consecutive
points — a three-pointer and
two layups —to pull the Johnnies
to within five with 11 minutes
to play.
From there, the St. John’s
defense ignited a rally, holding

went on a 13-0 run.
The Minutemen trimmed
the deficit to three points late in
the game, but a 15-3 run down
the stretch clinched the victory
for St. John’s.
Caraher led the Red Storm
with 17 points, while Josh Roberts
added 16 points and eight
rebounds. Julian Champagne
also finished with double digits
in scoring with 12. UMass’ T.J.
Weeks led all scorers with 19
points.
“David Caraher, I think I
must have went crazy because I
think once I put him in, I didn’t
take him out and then played 18
straight minutes,” head coach
Mike Anderson said. “Not once
did he put his hands up and say
‘Coach, I need a breather.’ That
tells me he wanted those minutes
and was very effective in
those minutes.”
