PUBLIC NOTICE
Audio Production During Pandemic: Ailin Gong Proves the Film Industry Never Sleeps
 TIMESLEDGER | QNS.COM | AUG. 14-20, 2020 9
Though the world continues facing tremendous
difficulties due to COVID-19, Ailin Gong has proven to defy
the odds when it comes to the art of audio production.
 The Show Must Go On
“Some projects are forced to delay, but this situation is
only temporary,” says Gong of the current audio and film
industry. “Not all filmmakers suspend their work. Most
of the editing work can be done on my computer and I
have my own personal mixing gear.”
The recent films Gong has arranged audio for are not
just typical, run-of-the-mill motion pictures. She has proven
her deep dedication during this time of quarantine, pushing
boundaries and preparing award-winning end products.
“In quarantine, I worked as the sound designer and
re-recording Mixer on a few short films like Sundance
Collaborative animated short film, Mechamorphosis. A
sci-fi short, Oblivio, already won Film of the Year in the
Rookie Film Festival and was a semi-finalist in the Rhode
Island International Film Festival,” explains Gong of her
proud achievements. “We communicated and updated
our work on Google Drive and shared thoughts through
Zoom meetings. The whole process went pretty well.”
Sound and Storytelling is the Backbone of Film
Graduating from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music
gave Gong the chance to experience different elements
of sound. These discoveries broadened her knowledge
and opened her mind to the many possibilities available
 in the film industry.
“The more I learned, the more it reinforced my idea
of working in the sound industry. Later, I got the chance
to study abroad with Emmy Award winner, Jeffrey Stern,”
Gong says. “He had worked on Silence of the Lambs and
Chicago – which are two of my favorite films of all time.”
Since traveling to the University of Miami to study
abroad, Gong’s list of successful projects has continued
to grow. Between working at Technicolor and Gigantic
Studios, she has prepared audio for well-known projects
such as the PBS film, George W. Bush, and the Netflix
documentary, Father Soldier Son. She worked on the
award-winning film, Amaraica, and the upcoming HBO
 film, Chateau Vato.
Working During the Pandemic and Looking Beyond it
Gong will be preparing an online animated series called
The Boy from Outer Space, directed by April Patrick.
Feature film, Cognac & Croquetas, won Best Feature
Screenplay in the University Film and Video Association
Awards and will be the third project Gong collaborated
on with Tom Musca as director.
The pandemic has unfortunately been the end to many
industries, but Gong is proof the business of audio and
sound design is not going anywhere. As she diligently
prepares “music language” for upcoming films, she looks
forward to taking on new projects, expanding her reach,
and growing her knowledge in new, diverse ways.
