Those of us who were here last year remem-ber the invasion from the TV show, Brain Dead, right? Our own Marsha Gellert was key in introducing the producers to Cryder Point. Well, the producers of Broad City, a half-hour sitcom that airs on Comedy Central, found us all by themselves--via Google maps, of all things. (Read about Broad City below). Stacey contacted me one day and said that a location scout called her to inquire about filming one of their episodes here, and would we consider it? “Of course,” I said, “it’s extra money to put into the reserve fund!” The premise of the episode that the produc-ers wanted Cryder Point for involved our two young leading ladies, Ilana and Abbi, going down to Florida to visit an elderly relative in a retirement community. They can’t believe how inexpensive Florida is compared to New York, and so they decide to buy a place in the com-plex. We are promised that hilarity will ensue when they are interviewed by a skeptical, “mature” Board for approval to buy in an area where most everyone is old enough to be their grand-parents. (Full disclosure: a couple of Cryder Board members volunteered to play the parts of the Florida Board members. “It’s typecast-ing!” I said. Alas, we were turned down. I guess they didn’t think we had enough real-life ex-perience for the roles. Haven’t they heard of method acting?) Anyway, the producers weren’t looking for Cryder to be a stand-in for Florida; rather, they were looking for a large apartment in which to shoot a couple of scenes. (I keep waiting for someone to show up to use our beauti-ful views, but I digress.) One apartment in the 01 Building--our dear friend Al Robbins’ apartment—was chosen to be the setting for the young women’s visit to their elderly relative and then restaged to be the place the women want to buy. One unexpected turn was that the producers thought that the Community Room would be a great place to shoot the interview scene with the Florida Board, and so they did. Unfortunately, we were not able to take pho-tos of the shoot because they were all inside 10 CRYDER POINT COURIER | MARCH 2017 | WWW.QUEENSCOURIER.COM and we would have interfered with the filming (unlike the Brain Dead episode where so much drama took place outside and we could hide behind a tree to catch a shot). We tried to get photos from the production company, but even they don’t have any that they can share, which means we’ll just have to wait until the episode airs to see what they did. About Broad City The series follows the antic and romantic lives of two women, Ilana Wexler and Abbi Abrams, who are in their early 30s and living in New York City. The stars and creators of the show are Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, and the program has been on Comedy Cen-tral since 2014. It was nominated for a Critic’s Choice Award for Best Comedy and for Best Actress (Jacobson) in 2015.
