Side man
booked for
anti-Asian
assault

Detectives arrested an
East Side man on
Tuesday who attacked
a 52-year-old woman on a rainsoaked
street Sunday afternoon
in yet another bias crime targeting
Asian New Yorkers.
Vincent Diehl, 47, of 1st
Avenue faces charges of assault
as a hate crime and aggravated
harassment for allegedly carrying
out the bigoted beating,
which occurred at 1:30 p.m. on
Aug. 22 along 1st Avenue near
East 19th Street.
Cops said Diehl allegedly
confronted the victim as she
walked through the rain. He allegedly
punched the woman in
the head, then made anti-Asian
statements toward her.

Transit cops arrested a
Brooklyn man who allegedly
attacked a commuter
with a hammer at the Union
Square station in the East Village
on Saturday night.
Law enforcement sources said
the perpetrator — identifi ed as
Jamar Newton, 41, of Porter
Avenue in Brooklyn — got into
an argument with the 44-yearold
man on the northbound
platform along the N/R line at
about 9:08 p.m. on Aug. 21.
Things turned violent, police
reported, when the perpetrator

The incident was reported to
the 13th Precinct. EMS treated
the victim at the scene for head
pain.
Police later presented the case
to the NYPD Hate Crimes Task
Force, which has conducted
investigations into numerous
anti-Asian bias attacks that
have occurred over the past
18 months. Last week, elected
offi cials and representatives of
the Asian community rallied in
Lower Manhattan calling for
further action from the city and
the NYPD to stop the hateful
violence.

said, Newton allegedly fl ed the
scene in an unknown direction.
Officers from the 13th
Precinct and NYPD Transit
District 4 responded to the
incident. The victim was pulled
from the tracks and rushed to
Bellevue Hospital, where he
was listed in stable condition.
Newton was arrested Sunday
night, Aug. 22, and charged with
assault, reckless endangerment
and criminal possession of a
weapon.
Video shows rush-hour shooter near
Penn Station who injured bystander

Police released video footage
on Aug. 24 of the man
responsible for a shooting
near Penn Station on Monday
afternoon that left a 58-year-old
man injured.
Law enforcement sources said
the victim was hit with a stray bullet
meant for another individual,
with whom the suspect had been
arguing at the Midtown transit
hub just before 5:42 p.m. on Aug.
23.
According to Police Commissioner
Dermot Shea, the shooter
got into a dispute with the intended
target when his request
was denied.
“The dispute spills out onto the
street” near the corner of West
31st Street and 7th Avenue, Shea
said during an Aug. 23 press conference.
“At some point in time,
one of the males — a male Black,
possibly with a red backpack —
pulls out a fi rearm, discharging
one round which misses the
intended target.”

Police described the perpetrator
in Monday’s shooting as a
Black man who wore a black
long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans,
and black-and-white sneakers
while carrying a black-and-red
backpack.
He’s shown in the security video
that the NYPD released Tuesday
engaging another man in a conversation
while departing an escalator
at Penn Station.

Man stabbed at Kips
Bay homeless shelter

A man was stabbed on
the grounds of a Kips
Bay homeless shelter
Thursday night, police reported.
NYPD officers and EMS
were called to the scene of the
reported knife attack at 400
East 30th St. around 10 p.m.
on Aug 20.
Police swiftly secured the
area and aided EMS to remove
a middle-aged man with a face
wound and blood smeared
hands from the 30th Street
Men’s Shelter.
Although the perpetrator reportedly
fl ed the scene following
the attack, police sources said,
a person was cuffed in connection
with the stabbing soon
thereafter.
amNewYork Metro observed
the victim receive treatment by
fi rst responders.
According to Alexander
Gonzalez Diaz, a resident of the
shelter, assaults are a common
occurrence that he’s learned to
cope with over time.
“I guess I’m just used to it
here,” Diaz said as he began
describing the confl ict between
shelter residents and authority
fi gures. He believes much of
the tension stems from a lack
of respect on both sides.
