College-preparatory Catholic high school
La Salle Academy, East Village, NY, will
continue to educate its all-male student
population remotely.
“After reviewing the results of parent,
faculty, and staff surveys, NYS guidelines
and CDC recommendations, and looking
at current Covid-19 numbers across the
country, we have decided to begin the
school year with remote education for the
first quarter,” said Kerry Conroy, Principal of
La Salle Academy. “Assuring the health and
safety of the adults and the students to the
best of our ability is our priority.”
The school’s administration is developing
plans to make even greater improvements to
the remote teaching methods implemented
last spring. A portion of the school’s budget
will be allocated for costs associated with
acquiring additional resources and expanding
professional development for teachers,
who will conduct more live classes using
the virtual meeting platforms of Microsoft
Teams and/or Google Meet. In addition, the
administrative team is developing a class
schedule that will fit its remote teaching and
learning needs.
“From March through June, La Salle Academy
did a commendable job of emergency remote
education with almost no notice. As we move
forward to begin the 2020-2021 school year,
we are developing plans to improve upon the
good work we did in the spring,” Conroy said.
La Salle switched to remote learning with
ease in March when the pandemic hit. A
technology partnership with Microsoft
provided the school with a sophisticated
framework for its tablet program far in
advance of the pandemic. Each student at
La Salle had been equipped with a Microsoft
Surface tablet, which enabled him to engage
in interactive lessons with his teachers using
software applications from mid-March
through late June.
La Salle’s teachers embraced this new
method of distance learning and teaching
by tapping the tools of technology and
exercising their creativity. La Salle continued
to provide a college-preparatory Catholic
education with great success. Parents were
extremely pleased with the outcome.
“It’s been wonderful to not have to worry
about our sons continuing to receive a quality
education during this time,” commented the
mother of a ninth grader.
“The swiftness of your actions, the
mobilization and commitment of the entire La
Salle team to implement contingency plans
to avoid academic teaching disruptions is
outstanding. We greatly appreciate the
professionalism with which you handled
the unique situation,” noted the parents of
another ninth grader.
“Our son’s four years at La Salle not
only helped him grow, but it also helped
him form friendships that will last him
a lifetime. It helped him experience
new things. It helped him explore other
interests and it helped him become the
young man that we are proud to call our
son. As a Catholic family, our faith relies on
our belief that our son would become an
extraordinary young man. All the sacrifices
of overtime, two jobs and loans have made
it all worth it. We believe without La Salle
our son would not be ready for the world
socially, academically and spiritually,” said
Theresa Falcon, parent of Jimmy Falcon ’20.
BEST VALUE IN THE MARKET
With a 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio, La Salle’s
students receive individualized attention in
both the physical and virtual classroom.
Small class sizes, combined with an ethnically
diverse student body and faculty, create a
unique environment where students become
part of a tight-knit community.
Students receive a high-quality, collegepreparatory
education at an extremely low
price point. Tuition at La Salle is only $11,000
per year, yet the actual cost to educate each
student is close to $22,000. (Generous donors
make this discount possible.) To complement
its rigorous academic curriculum, La Salle
offers five Advanced Placement classes as
well as college-credit courses.
La Salle’s graduates have proven to be
successful; this year’s Class of 2020 consists
of 74 young men who achieved a 100% college
acceptance rate and collectively earned more
than $15 million in scholarships and financial
aid to attend college or university in the fall.
Alumni attend NYU, Villanova University, Penn
State, Manhattan College, and the University
of Wisconsin-Madison just to name a few.
“While not always easy…I wouldn’t have it
any other way…I work hard to pay full tuition
for my son. He’s proven it’s worth it...Why?
Because he works hard and has remained
focused day after day for years...He earns
his keep! But most importantly, because I see
how much he appreciates being surrounded
by teachers and an administration who listens
and cares and leads by example! Thank you
for helping me set my son up for a bright and
successful future,” said Eileen Mendez, parent
of Steven Dumeng ’20, co-valedictorian who
will be attending Boston College in the fall.
