Santos From Sophie Santos, one of the
most exciting emerging voices in comedy,
comes an honestly funny memoir
about the cringeworthy and hilarious
journey of coming of age and into her
own. Sophie’s debut book, The One
You Want To Marry (And Other Identities
I’ve Had), hits shelves Oct. 1.
Here’s the book synopsis: The only child
of a perpetually transferring Filipino-
Spanish US Army officer and a spitfire
nurse, Sophie Santos spent her early
years starting over again and again—
and accumulating her fair share of
anxieties. Growing up in 99.6 percent
white communities, where girls had to
learn to flash Vaseline-capped smiles
before they’d be considered real women,
Sophie adapted. Determined to fit in,
she transformed from a tomboy misfit
into a hormone-crazed beauty pageant
contestant and a southern sorority girl,
among other personalities. She nailed
each role she took on, not shockingly,
but nothing seemed to fit her true self.
In her twenties, floundering and locked
in her bedroom with lesbian YouTube
clips playing on repeat, Sophie began
to understand that her true self might
be more tomboy misfit than southern
belle. That realization set her off
on a journey that led her through an
unexpected lesbian puberty and eventually
toward a New York comedy career.
Sophie is now a New York based comedian,
writer and host of The Lesbian
Agenda, a critically-acclaimed satirical
comedy show featuring up-and-coming
LGBTQ+ standups and performers such
as Sydnee Washington (Comedy Central)
and Jessica Henderson (Shrill). You
can also hear Sophie in the new Audible
Original Hit Job alongside Pete Davidson
and Keke Palmer, and this summer
as Emily in Hot White Heist directed
by Alan Cumming. She has written for
shows on Bravo and MTV, appeared on
Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and performed at
the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and The
Kennedy Center. Social Media Instagram

Saturday, Oct. 2. The 4th Ave Yarn
Bomb, now in its 3rd year, proclaims
“CODE RED!” to call attention to the
Climate Change Emergency impacting
our Brooklyn community, our country
and the world. Flood, fire, rising sea
levels and other extreme weather can’t
be ignored. Stretching over 30 feet long
and 10 feet high, the colorful, eclectic
Yarn Bomb panels illustrate climate
change consequences by combining a
variety of inventive fiber art creations
that reflect both negative consequences
(fire, dead birds, flooding) and the ideal
of a cleaner, healthier planet (sun, flowers)
with a call to action. Created by
scores of community artists using new
and recycled materials, the Yarn Bomb
will be a daily climate crisis reminder,
prominently displayed across the wide
fence on the 4th Avenue border of
Gowanus and Park Slope 4th Avenue,
between 3rd and 4th Streets. Installation
Day, Saturday October 2, will be a
community event, with an open call for
community assistance. Local environmental
activists groups are invited to
join in, sharing specific advocacy ideas
and activities. The Yarn Bomb installation
will weave information, education
and advocacy into the fiber art display.
The Yarn Bomb is a free, community
art installation, open to all and will be
on view from Saturday, Oct. 2 (rain date
Oct 3) to Nov. 15, 2021. We hope that
the site will be a location/background
for additional climate change actions.
After the initial installation, selected
yarn bomb panels will be available for
use by other community groups. Community
partners: Arts Gowanus, Forth
on Fourth Ave (FOFA), a Committee
of the Park Slope Civic Council, The
Old Stone House, Textile Arts Center,

Friday, Oct. 1. WHITE WAVE Dance
announces three free performances of
their newest production, iyouuswe II
(I-You-Us-We-Two), on Oct. 1, 9, and
30, 2021 at Bethesda Fountain, DUMBO
Archway, and the Home of WHITE
WAVE Dance, respectively, at 5pm EST
as part of the City Artist Corps Grant
Initiative. iyouuswe II is a multi-year
collaboration with pioneering choreographer
Young Soon Kim and composer
Marco Cappelli, in collaboration
with their performers, as they continue
to explore the body’s three dimensions
in space. Probing the weight of
human emotions, the work presents
a vividly colored vision where movement
and mise-en-scène meld seamlessly.
During this critical time of the
Covid Pandemic, this piece challenges
us to examine who we are and how we
relate to ourselves and to each other.
It is a story of developing relationships
by which we struggle to find a sense of
‘i’ as part of a ‘we.’ Friday, October 1,
2021 at 5pm Bethesda Fountain in Central
