Perry welcomes Jamaica’s
new Consul General to NY
By Nelson A. King
Jamaican Brooklyn Assemblyman
Nick Perry and his compatriot, investment
advisor Noel Spencer, recently
co-hosted a welcome reception for
Alsion Roach-Wilson, the newly-appointed
Jamaican Consul General to
New York.
According to Frank Shea, Perry’s
communications director, the reception
— held at Jammins Café on Utica
Avenue in Brooklyn — was “jampacked,
with a who’s who of members
of the Jamaican Diaspora, community
leaders and elected officials.”
Shea said dignitaries joined with
Perry — who represents the 58th
Assembly District in Brooklyn — in
welcoming Roach-Wilson to East
Flatbush, Brooklyn.
Among the welcoming party were
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams,
Brooklyn Congresswoman Yvette
Clarke, state Assembly members
Helene Weinstein, Diana Richardson,
Alicia Hyndman and Clyde Vanel,
City Council members Dr. Mathieu
Eugene and Farah Louis, and former
New York City Councilwoman Dr. Una
S.T. Clarke, Congresswoman Clarke’s
mother.
“Although Consul General Roach-
Wilson is no stranger to New York,
as a former resident of Brooklyn, she
worked many years in the finance
industry on Wall Street,” Shea told
Caribbean Life.
“Appointed in July, she will now
be tasked with promoting and safeguarding
the interests of Jamaica and
Jamaicans in New York state and 32
other states including Puerto Rico
and Bermuda,” he added.
“On behalf of all the residents of
the 58th Assembly District, I wish
Consul General Roach-Wilson the
best of luck, as she serves our beloved
island-nation of Jamaica right here
in the great city we call the ‘Big
Apple,’” Perry said. “She has my full
support.”
Shea said Roach-Wilson promised
to approach the office in “a non-traditional,
hands-on manner, outlining
an office initiative called ‘CG on the
Beat.’”
“Instead of sitting behind a desk
all day, I will go out into the community
and meet everyone, and get a full
understanding of what is happening
in our community, talk to the people
and hear what you want in order to let
your voices be heard,” Roach-Wilson
said, according to Shea.
