A Sunshine Girls
legend departs
By George Alleyne
Jamaica’s national netball
team, Sunshine Girls, has lost one
of its greatest talents to retirement,
wing defence, goal keep,
goal defence and former captain,
Vangelee Williams, who recently
put away the ball internationally
for good.
Citing a lack of motivation for
her departure the 28-year-old said
that she thought long and hard,
even consulted friends and family
about the decision and after taking
almost a year off decided to
call it quits and pursue a professional
career in provision of affordable
public housing.
Her departure is significant for
the Sunshine Girls who currently
hold a world ranking of number
four and have for a long time not
fallen below number five globally.
Since entering the national
team in 2011, she was a force to
reckon with worldwide in over 50
matches for Jamaica, contributing
in a major way to winning a gold
medal with the U-16 team, an U-21
bronze medal, two senior bronze
medals at the Commonwealth
Games, plus two silver medals in
Fast5 netball.
While she regrets not winning
a major senior gold medal for
Jamaica, Vangelee expressed satisfaction
with her time on the court
for her nation.
“I’ve been blessed to be able
to represent my country Jamaica
over all these years. I am super
proud of all the contributions I’ve
made to the programes I’ve been
a part of — the U16, U21 and the
senior squad. At each level I’ve
managed to gain team successes
as well as individual.”
This world talent who will nonetheless
continue playing locally,
said, “I decided to do it at this time
because after my break from last
year, I have been back in training
since June and it was always
a conflicting story — continue or
don’t continue.
“So I have asked myself all of
the questions and I have spoken to
my friends about it, and they have
advised me to keep praying about
it and look into myself to find
the real truth because they didn’t
want to give me an answer.” Jamaican netball player, Vangelee Williams. Williams’ Facebook page
