Not Even rain could have stopped
England from defeating the West
Indies on the final day in the second
session after the inclement weather
threatened to bring play to a stop.
But it was just enough time for
England to retain the Wisden Trophy
after another stunning batting
collapse, which sent West Indies to
their heaviest-ever Test defeat at
Old Trafford, Manchester, in terms
of runs as they conceded the threematch
series, 2-1, to end their brief
hold on the coveted Trophy on Tuesday.
Needing to bat the entire day to
force a draw with the victory target
399 already an academic interest,
the West Indies capitulated for 129
in their second innings an hour
before the scheduled tea interval, to
slump to 296-run loss.

All-rounder

England’s Ben Stokes has ended West
Indies captain Jason Holder’s 18-month
reign as Test cricket’s leading all-rounder,
following the regional team’s 113-
run defeat in the Second Test at Old
Trafford last week.
Holder started the game 54 points
ahead of Stokes but watched as England’s
talisman slammed 176 and an
unbeaten 78, and also took three wickets,
to assume the number one position
in the International Cricket Council
(ICC) rankings.

Roach joins
200-club
By Azad Ali
Fast bowler Kemar Roach became
only the ninth West Indies bowler to
take 200 wickets in Tests.
The 32-year-old Roach reached his
landmark in the morning’s fifth over
on the second day of the final third and
final Test against England on Saturday
when he forced Chris Woakes to play a
delivery onto his stumps.
Roach celebrated the wicket by raising
the ball in his right hand then raising
his left hand in a clenched fist.
His career got sidelined in 2014 when
he was involved in a car crash in Barbados,
suffering shoulder and ankle
injuries that saw his performances take
a dive to the extent that he was dropped.
He made his return to the fold on a tour
of England in 2017.
