Calm returns to Williams expresses disappointment

as we want a thorough investigation. “It
is not for us to play judge and jury and
decide who is right or wrong.”
The rioting in several strongholds districts
of the governing People’s National
Movement (PNM) has come just as the
country is awaiting the announcement
of an election date. Area parliamentary
representative Marlene McDonald visited
the area in the height of the protests,
appealing for calm but called for better
relations with the police and dialogue.
Most politicians stayed away from
putting a political spin on the riots
and protest, appearing to keep it in the
realm of anger over the police shootings.
But usually combative Police Chief
Gary Griffith told local TV CN 3 that
officers have already identified a gang
leader as being behind the protests that
had paralyzed the capital on Tuesday.
“There was a well orchestrated plan
to destabilize the country but it failed,”
boasted Griffith. I want to ask the
public, please don’t be influenced by
those who have their specific agenda.
You will see him standing up where
those protests are hoping that they
could get some media coverage, hoping
that they’d be interviewed. They
have an agenda. There was a deliberate
plot. There was a certain individual, we
have intelligence that he was the mastermind,
was liaising with other gangleaders,
speaking with them, co-ordinating
with them and then standing up
there and pretending that he was God’s
gift and trying to make everything
right and pure,” Griffith said.
Heavily armed police remained on
red alert Wednesday even as tensions
remained and as authorities scramble
to organize a transparent investigation
into the fatal weekend shootings.
Police also said that a mother of five
who had left her home to video record
the protests was shot dead but officials
are uncertain who shot her. Officers
arrested dozens of youths.

“This budget reiterates that message
in a failure to commit on paper
to a just transition for school safety,”
he continued. “It is one that I cannot
support and will not sign off on.
“These are not my only objections in
this budget, but they are the most
glaring, the clearest actions that this
administration could have corrected,
and emblematic of such an unwillingness
to commit to real transformational
change that I am compelled to
act in my charter mandated capacity
as Public Advocate.”
Williams said this action “cannot
be taken lightly,” stating that
“it seems that when New Yorkers
raised their voices for change, when
my office called for specific, tangible
actions, this administration either did
not listen, did not care, or did not take
us seriously.
“Nor, it seems, did they read the
charter,” he said.
