RE-ELECT DEMOCRAT FARAH LOUIS JUNE 22, 2021
Caribbean Life, JUNE 18-24, 2021 13
We are proud to be
Brooklynites. Brooklyn is
rich, vibrant, and cultured
but our working people
have long struggled with
the astronomical cost of
living that continues to
rise, the broken healthcare
system and ineffective public
services that fail to meet
their needs. Brooklynites
have dealt with these challenges
for years, but the
COVID-19 pandemic further
exposed and exacerbated
the disparities that
many faced over the years.
As we transition out of
the worst of the pandemic
and Election Day nears, we
must refl ect on who’s been
there for the residents of
Brooklyn’s 45th Council
District over the last diffi -
cult year.
Council Member Farah
Louis has helped community
members –– improving
health care, securing
real affordable housing,
increasing equity in education,
and reducing food insecurity.
She will continue to
take on the issues that matter
most to Brooklynites.
Council Member Farah
Louis is a proven leader,
and we should re-elect her.
Council Member Louis
is a child of immigrants,
who grew up in and deeply
understands our neighborhoods.
Her constituents are
her neighbors and friends,
not strangers. Her insight
hasmade her a compassionate,
responsive, and effective
representative for the
district.
Council Member Louis’s
fi rst priority has been helping
the community recover
from the pandemic. She delivered
over 1 million boxes
of fresh food and PPE all
over the district. She successfully
opened over 30
food pantries and supports
weekly food distribution
pop-ups. When in-person
learning shut down, she
took action to help our students
and families. Council
Member Louis fought to get
100,000 electronic devices
for students, and passed legislation
requiring schools
to provide the necessary
remote learning equipment
for children with disabilities.
She passed legislation
requiring the Department
of Education to provide
training to parents struggling
to help their children
with remote learning, and
launched an anti-bullying
campaign after a young
boy in the district was bullied
by classmates and later
died.
Council Member Louis
has also been a leader on
health care, housing, and
public safety. She increased
access to doulas and midwives,
and secured $25 million
for mobile crisis units
across the City. She funded
the fi rst-ever 100% affordable
housing exclusively
for seniors in our district.
She successfully fought
for the full restoration of
the Summer Youth Employment
Program to keep
our youth engaged and productive
during the summer.
She secured over $1
million for the Cure Violence
program –– proven
to reduce gun and gang
violence –– in our 69th
and 70th precincts. These
investments are helping
young people, particularly
justice-involved youth, fi nd
job opportunities and resolve
potential confl icts instead
of turning to violence
Council Member Louis has
already delivered time and
again for the district, and
she will do even more in
her second term.
She will fi ght to open
more senior affordable
housing, and to create a
cease-and-desist zone in
the district to protect homeowners
from overdevelopment.
She has also introduced
legislation to ensure
late rent payments do not
impact credit scores, and
to support mortgage extensions
for homeowners and
small businesses owners
impacted by the pandemic.
As Chair of the Council’s
Mental Health Committee
and daughter of a nurse,
Council Member Louis will
continue to lead the way on
expanding healthcare and
mental healthcare access.
She is working to launch
the district’s fi rst-ever
women’s health clinic, and
to ensure access to highquality,
affordable mental
health services in our
Black and Brown communities.
To ensure our streets
are safe and reduce gun violence,
Louis understands
that we must focus on both
prevention and intervention.
She’ll continue funding
for programs like Cure
Violence, that stop gun violence
from happening by
engaging with potential
perpetrators. She’ll fi ght
for education and job opportunities
for our youth,
and open a new community
center in East Flatbush to
bring community members
together. She’ll hold
the Mayor and NYPD accountable,
ensuring they
focus their efforts on seizing
weapons and reducing
gun violence, not making
unnecessary stops or trying
to solve mental health
issues with force.
Council Member Louis’s
deep roots in the district,
proven leadership in offi ce,
and plans for the future
make her the natural choice
to represent our district.
Whether you are voting
absentee, early June 12
through June 20, or on Election
Day, June 22, vote to reelect
Council Member Farah
Louis as your #1 choice in
the Democratic primary!
