Barbados’ Junior Squash National Team
returned home from Trinidad and Tobago over
the weekend sporting trophies of victory in
another Caribbean championship.
The youngsters copped their third successive
overall Caribbean Area Squash Association
Championship, and in the process senior
Caribbean champ, Meagan Best, picked up her
seventh junior title and Khamal Cumberbatch
laid claim to his seventh individual crown.
The Bajans came home with a total of four
individual titles as Eboni Atherley captured
the Girls’ Under-13 title category and Phoebe
Gittens brought home the Under-11 trophy.
The Bajan girls emerged top in their category
but the men had to settle for second place to
Guyana. Their overall team points however
made these powerhouses the number one
team again, followed by Guyana in second and
Jamaica third in this competition for persons 19
years and under.
Having just reached 19 years and still below
the threshold of junior, Meagan Best is a
double-title holder as she is also the Senior
Caribbean Champion. But she told the media
on return to Barbados that being the boss in the
upper category did not make competing among
the juniors any easier.
“Every game and every opponent are different.
I still remain just as focused and I am just as
nervous at the start.
“Next year will be my final junior year, along
with Jada and Jodie Smith-Padmore. So, of
course, we want to do something special in our
final appearance in Bermuda,” Best said.
