Incumbent Cricket West Indies (CWI)
President, Ricky Skerritt is set to return
to the helm of the cricket organization
unopposed at elections later this month
after the under-fire pair of Anand Sanasie,
and running-mate Calvin Hope,
announced last week they were withdrawing
their challenge.
In a joint statement, Sanasie and
Hope said the recent developments
with the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)
elections surrounding the postponement
of the recent CWI Annual General
Meeting (AGM), had forced them to
Caribbean L 26 ife, April 9-15, 2021
“withdraw our respective candidacies
for president and vice-president in the
CWI election.”
The statement said this was because
of the “unfortunate circumstances
leading up to and recent events in
Guyana regarding the Guyana regarding
the Guyana Cricket Board, one of
the six full members of CWI, together
with the refusal by the leadership of
CWI to uphold the highest standards,
long-standing traditions and rules for
governing the administration of West
Indies cricket.”
Sanasie and Hope, a Barbados Cricket
Association (BCA) vice-president, were
expected to face off against Skerritt and
his vice-president, Dr. Kishore Shallow.
However, both the BCA and the GCB
said they were dissatisfied with the
distribution of CWI’s audited financial
statements, contending the governing
body had not provided the documents
in the stipulated 14 days in advance.
The no-show by the BCA and GCB
was met by a backlash from their territorial
board counterparts with all four
who attended the AGM issuing statements
condemning the move. The new
date for the AGM is now April 11.

before the close.
West Indies victory was always in
doubt once rain forced a 35-minute
delay at the start with Sri Lanka’s
captain, Dimuth Karunarante using
the match to end his wretched-run
in the series with a top-score of
75 not out while Oshad Fernando
carved out an unbeaten 66 and left
hander opener Lahiru Thririmanne,
(39). Thririmanne was one of the two
batsmen to be out.
Kraigg Brathwaite (126) completed
his first Test century as captain
on the second day of the match (after
West Indies were put in to bat by Sri
Lanka) and his ninth overall while
spin-bowler Rakheem Cornwall (73)
recorded his second consecutive halfcentury,
as the host rallied to score
350. Brathwaite ‘s wicket was the last
to fall.
It was the 28-year-old’s first triplehundred
Test score in three years. Sri
Lanka made 258 in their first innings
in reply to West Indies 350.
Captain Braithwaite said afterwards
they were always aware of
the challenges before them on a
good batting wicket but praised his
young players for their disciplined
approach.
Joseph, who has also taken 54
wickets from 34 ODIs, has become a
fixture in the West Indies team, ever
since his starring role in West Indies’
capture of the ICC Under-19 World
Cup five years ago.
His batting has also come on of
late, with half-centuries on successive
Test tours of New Zealand and
Bangladesh.
The County season bowls off on
April 8 with Worcestershire meeting
Essex in their opening match.
Jaguars.
CONCACAF said Emery Welshman
then found the net in the 81st minute
to cap the victory.
“With the win, Guyana can hold onto
hope of advancing from Group F,” it
said. “The Bahamas, with two defeats in
March, still hang on to an outside shot
but will need victories in June against
Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago,
and have other results go their way.”
CONCACAF said Belize notched its
first win of the cycle, beating Turks and
Caicos Islands, 5-0.
It said Carlos Bernardez scored just
before the end of the first half and
then did so again in the second, with a
goal in the 48th minute, widening the
margin after halftime substitute Jesse
August had scored in the 47th minute.
CONCACAF said Deshawon Nembhard
added a goal of his own in the
81st minute, and Deon McCaulay
“pounced on a rebound and put it in for
a stoppage-time tally to take the final
score to 5-0.”
Belize closed out qualification
against Nicaragua in June, while Turks
and Caicos Islands (TCI) meet Haiti,
CONCACAF said.
It said St. Vincent and the Grenadines
also found their first win of
WCQ, getting a 3-0 result against the
British Virgin Islands on March 30.
CONCACAF said Richmond Kickers
talisman Oalex Anderson got the scoring
started early with a 10th-minute
goal, and just 11 minutes later it was
Zidane Sam getting on the scoresheet.
Four minutes after coming into the
match, CONCACAF said substitute
Azinho Solomon “put the game out of
reach for BVI and ensured the Vincy
Heat victory party could begin with an
86th-minute strike.”
CONCACAF said a 33rd-minute goal
from Saydrel Lewis was the difference
as Grenada beat the US Virgin Islands
(USVI).
It’s the first victory for the Spice
Boyz under the guidance of former
Canada assistant Michael Findlay, CONCACAF
said.
“They’ll look to build on that momentum
when they head to Antigua and
Barbuda and close out qualification
