As the pandemic
abruptly shut down the
city, Bay Ridge Skin & Cancer
Dermatology proudly
continued to serve our community
as it had for the last
50 years.
Dr. David Biro, the office’s
primary physician
said, “We were determined
to keep the office open.
We felt a responsibility to
patients who still needed
care. We saw a lot of people
who might have otherwise
ended up in the overwhelmed
emergency rooms
at the time.”
As we sheltered in place
diligently washing our
hands, Dr. Biro was there
to help with the rashes
and dryness that resulted.
Keeping the office open
also meant that skin cancers
were diagnosed and
attended to that would have
otherwise resulted in potentially
dangerous delay of
treatment. Many patients
came to their office for infections
and abscesses that
needed to be drained.
As the COVID numbers
continued to rise, the office
is started to see more
patients with aliments
connected to the virus. Patients
experienced temporary
hair loss, COVID toes
and facial irritations from
their masks. Whatever the
reason for the visit Dr. Biro
and his staff were ready to
assist. The office was continuously
disinfected, and
all personnel wore masks
and gloves. Patients had
their temperatures taken
when they entered. “Thankfully
no one from our office
caught COVID during this
period,” said Dr. Biro.
During the time when
people were hesitant to
leave their homes, Bay
Ridge Skin & Cancer Dermatology
remained in
touch with patients via
Telemedicine.
Like many New Yorkers,
Dr. Biro didn’t think
the pandemic would be so
prolonged. He remains optimistic
that better days
are ahead, and recently
received the COVID vaccine.
“As the vaccinations
increase, the hospital staff
will become less overworked,”
he says, and this
will allow, “the community,
the state, and the country
to start getting back to normal.”
Until then, there are still
hurdles to overcome, so remain
vigil.
