Wave Hill to reopen July 30

Fans of a popular outdoor
garden in Riverdale will soon be
able to roam its grounds starting
next week.
Wave Hill, a 28-acre public garden
and cultural center overlooking
the Hudson River and Palisades,
which has been shuttered
for four months due to COVID-19,
is reopening on July 30.
It will offi cially let the public
back in with required pre-registration,
reduced hours and fewer
visitors.
“The last four months have
been a journey like no other,”
commented Wave Hill President
and Executive Director Karen
Meyerhoff. “We are so grateful
for the many ways that visitors
have expressed their support
for Wave Hill, and I can’t wait to
share with you all the beauty and
serenity of Wave Hill in summer!
Especially given the economic
hardship so many are facing during
this time, we are happy to extend
free admission during the
fi rst two weeks we are open.”
Visitors are asked to have
masks on when entering and exiting
the garden and when using
a restroom. Face coverings may
be removed when on the grounds
and social distancing is possible.
To protect guests and staff, the
garden is reopening in phases.
It will initially open Thursday
through Sunday, noon to 5:30
p.m. The number of visitors will
be limited each day and everyone
will be required to reserve an admission
ticket in advance. This
ticket will be required to enter
the grounds.
Every Monday, starting July
27, visitors will have access to
reserve admission tickets for
the following Thursday through
Sunday. During the fi rst week,
Wave Hill members will have
early access to weekly ticket reservations,
starting Fridays.
The visitor parking lot will
not be open and shuttle service
is temporarily suspended due to
social distancing requirements.
Courtesy carts and wheelchairs
are also temporarily unavailable.
Again due to COVID-19, the
buildings will be closed, but restrooms
will be open on the lower
level of Glyndor Gallery and at
the Perkins Visitor Center. Visitors
are welcome to bring water,
but no food will be allowed on the
premises.
When visitors make their reservations
online, a confi rmation
email will include a link to everything
they will want to know
before coming and what to expect
for their visit. Learn more at

Typically, attending tutoring
programs like Kumon and Kaplan
are costly. So a group of teens found
a solution to the money issue and
are launching a free virtual tutoring
program next month.
Dubbed Scholar Studio, the program
is being led by high school students
from the top high schools in
New York City, including Townsend
Harris High School, The Bronx High
School of Science, Stuyvesant High
School and The Mary Louis Academy.
Its mission is to provide free
tutoring services to those who are
struggling due to COVID-19.
Students will be introduced to
regents-level classes that will help
them in eighth grade, be prepared
for the SHSAT and get tips and tricks
used by high school students who
were successful in these exams.
Kristina Lian and Frances Lum
are juniors at Bronx Science and are
some of the tutors in the program.
They stressed that not only will it
help students get ready for the school
year, but it will also allow the kids to
interact socially.
“All of us thought this would be
a really good way to give back to the
community,” Lian said.
The girls have tutored kids in the
past and are ready to help prepare
youngsters for the Regents, SATs
and school in general.
In total, there are 10 tutors and
there will be two assigned to each
class. The program is targeting seventh
and eighth graders, but is also
open to older students.
The girls told the Bronx Times
they are preparing lessons via
Google Classroom and slide shows.
While they know it won’t be easy to
do, especially because they are not
there in person, the duo is up for the
task.
“It’s defi nitely challenging teaching
online,” Lian said. “You can’t 100
percent know if they’re paying attention.”
The classes will be held Aug. 3
to Aug. 27, Monday through Thursday
from 9 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. on Zoom.
The curriculum is custom-made, using
resources from school textbooks,
test prep books, past regents and
SHSAT examinations.
There will be three Regents
classes (Algebra 1, living environment
and U.S. History) and two
SHSAT classes (math and English).
There are 100 spots per class and students
are accepted on a fi rst-come
fi rst-served basis. To register go to

If anyone has any further questions
about our program, they can
