Massive explosion blows
manhole in Crown Heights
BY JESSICA PARKS
Around 100 Crown
Heights residents were left
without power for several
hours after a massive manhole
explosion on Tuesday
morning — which completely
incinerated a car
that was parked on the
above street.
Utility company Con
Edison did not determine
the cause of the explosion
— which occurred on
Dean Street between Utica
and Rochester avenues at
around 1 am — but speculated
that the “wet weather”
may have contributed.
Company reps said that
power was not fully restored
to its customers until
8:14 am on Wednesday
morning — more than 31
hours after the explosion —
due to a separate incident
on the same power line.
Wilfi do Mazarigos,
whose 2009 Toyota Camry
was wrecked by the impact,
simply expressed gratitude
that nobody was hurt from
the explosion.
