Gowanus goes green
Dye turns Gowanus Canal emerald green

Usually it’s the Gowanus
Canal that turns people
green.
Environmental offi -
cials planted a harmless
green dye in the Gowanus
Canal on Thursday to test
nearby sewer lines, turning
the putrid canal into
a neon emerald shade that
alarmed some passersby.
“This is wild,” said
Janell Baptista, who
posted a video of the glowing
Gowanus from the Carroll
Street Bridge on his
Twitter account on Thursday
afternoon. “Just worried
for the people around
this area who live here!”
Edward Timber, a
spokesman for the Department
of Environmental
Protection, claimed that
the dye was harmless,
and that it would dissipate
naturally. By Friday, the
canal had turned a more
subtle shade of turquoise,
and locals familiar with
the notoriously contaminated
Superfund site remained
unfazed by the
odd hue.
“I wouldn’t have noticed,”
said Sarah King, a
Bedford-Stuyvesant resident
who works near the
canal. “I think I only notice
if it smells worse.”
Other residents said
that the fi lthy canal dons
different shades of green
that change with the seasons,
like foliage.
“In the summer, it’s
sort of a lime green,” said
Sarah Kovacs, a Gowanus
resident of 10 years, who
added that the river’s jade
coloring was actually a bit
of an improvement.
“It looks clearer,” she
said.
Another Brooklyn resident
also praised the canal’s
new color, but noted
that it was far from natural
looking.
“It’s kinda pretty,” siad
Danny Walton. “But lots of
pretty things are terrible.”
Good-Night Bazaar
BY COLIN MIXSON
Brooklyn Night Bazaar
is closing its Greenpoint location
before the end of November,
with owners citing
a frustrating inability
to come to terms with their
landlord over a new lease
agreement.
“I guess this is what you
get when you keep convincing
yourself that signing
short term leases are a good
idea. We were naive enough
to actually (foolishly) think
that this time would be different,
this time the landlords
would be reasonable,
this time they’d work with
us...but nope, surprise!”
read a statement released
by owner Belvy Klein.
Klein and partner
Aaron Bourdo opened the
most recent Kings County
incarnation of their popular
events venue at the old
Polonaise Terrace Polish
banquet hall at 150 Greenpoint
Avenue in 2016, offering
three fl oors of fun
and entertainment that included
karaoke, ping pong,
mini golf, an arcade, and a
400-person live music and
events venue on the second
level.
But Brooklyn Night Bazaar
has struggled to maintain
its lease in the past, and
a former landlord kicked
Klein and Bourdo out of a
23,000-sqare foot warehouse
on Banker Street to make
way for a luxury car company
in 2015.
In announcing the sad
news, Klein promised a
“killer run” of shows and
events through Nov. 30, and
said the 150 Greenpoint Avenue
venue would host a
burger pop-up for the last
eight weeks of the Bazaar’s
existence.
And the entrepreneurs
are still pursuing plans to
open a restaurant in nearby
McCarren Park sometime
in the coming years.
