A PERFECT DAY FOR A STROLL
BY CHANDLER KIDD
It was quite a day to celebrate
summer by the bay!
Families made their way
down to Sheepshead Bay Road
to enjoy the beautiful weather
and fun summer activities, including
pony rides, at the annual
Sheepshead Bay Summer
Stroll on June 23.
Other activities that proved
popular during the stroll were
face painting, live music and
art shows. And who can forget
the assortment of fun summer
treats, ranging from popsicles
to icees. The event — hosted
by Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz,
Kingsborough Community
College and the Brooklyn
Chamber of Commerce
— also provided Brooklynites
with information about health
care and free health screenings.
The summer stroll allowed
Bay Ridge resident Diane
Varano to showcase her paintings
and photography.
She was selling her work,
which was offered in card
and color photographs for $5 a
piece — or four for $12. Her oil
painting were not for sale, but
Varano wanted to display them
to receive feedback from those
in attendance.
“I was very surprised. A lot
of people came over to ask about
my paintings. Just having people
look at my paintings and appreciate
it means the world to
me,” Varano said.
Varano’s series of oil paintings,
titled “Broken but Beautiful,”
was inspired by broken
glass and has a personal message
that she hopes resonated
with those who ogled her work.
“The point is a lot of people
are broken. As humans we all
have different struggles, but
most of us don’t take the time
to realize that we are all beautiful,”
Varano said.
