Cops, EMS, FDNY and counter
terrorism fl ooded Pelham Bay this
morning as a suspicious package
was reported.
But by 11:30 a.m. the pressure
cooker that was found in front of
Ralph Giordano Funeral Home at
1727 Crosby Ave., was deemed an
invert object by the NYPD.
Residents crowded the street as a
member of the bomb squad dressed
in full gear, checked to see if it
was real or a hoax. Fortunately, it
was the latter.
The owner of the funeral home,
Jeannie Walker, told the Bronx
Times someone called the police
to tell them there was a suspicious
package at the front of her business.
Police asked her for access to the security

cameras when she arrived
around 8:30 a.m. Walker did not
know who contacted the police.
According to Walker, the police
observed someone dropping
the pressure cooker in front of the
funeral home on the camera.
Norma Rodriguez, a nearby resident,
said last night around 10:30
p.m. she witnessed a man throwing
a pressure cooker in the trash at 1723
Crosby Ave. She did not think anything
of it until this morning when
she realized it was the same one.
“I said, ‘oh a pressure cooker I
have one’ and I just kept walking
the dog,” Rodriguez said. “I was
shocked. I heard the helicopter and
said maybe I need to evacuate. It’s
really upsetting because we live in
crazy times.”

On Sept. 15, Transwestern Real
Estate Services (TRS) announced it
represented Zeta Charter Schools
in a transaction totaling 95,000
square feet at 1475 Macombs Rd. and
1325 Jerome Ave.
The adjacent buildings will house
Zeta Bronx Mount Eden, a new pre-
K through eighth grade school with
a phased opening beginning at the
start of the 2021-2022 school year.
Transwestern Partners Lindsay Ornstein
and Stephen Powers and Vice
President Thomas Hines provided
Occupier Solutions services for Zeta
Charter Schools.
“Zeta Bronx Mount Eden will be
our fi rst school in Bronx Community
School District 9,” said Emily A. Kim,
CEO of Zeta Charter Schools. “We look
forward to bringing our innovative
whole-child learning approach to children
and families in central Bronx. We
are excited to work within new construction,
which allows Zeta to create
a state-of-the-art facility that provides
a tremendous environment in which
to prepare children for leadership
and true participation in a modern
world economy.”
Zeta Bronx 3’s pre-K through fi rst
grade programs will occupy 20,000
square feet of space in the lower
level and fi rst fl oor of 1325 Jerome
Ave., which is scheduled for completion
in mid-2021. Grades two through
eight will encompass the entire
75,000-square-foot building at 1475 Macombs
Rd., which will be completed in
mid-2023. In addition to classrooms,
the site will also feature a playground
and outdoor soccer fi eld.
“We are pleased to have found this
unique opportunity for Zeta Charter
Schools, with two adjacent development
sites and the rare and coveted
feature of outdoor space for a soccer
fi eld,” Ornstein said. “It provides
Zeta the ability to open its doors much
sooner through a phased-in approach
and also creates a campus from which
to support generations of learners in
the Bronx community.”
The site is being developed by Bolivar
Development. The Zeta Charter
School commitment was structured
as a leasehold condominium, which
offers signifi cant savings to nonprofits
by utilizing the organization’s
tax-exempt status. Transwestern previously
represented Zeta in transactions
for two other schools in the
Bronx, at 425 Westchester Ave. and
1910 Arthur Ave.
“We are thrilled to be working with
Zeta Charter Schools and Transwestern
to create these important facilities
for families in the Bronx,” said Peter
Fine, principal of Bolivar.
