be kind.”
Franklin D Roosevelt: “It
is common to take a method
and try it. If it fails admit it
frankly and try another.”
The extensive number of
petty crimes and nuisance issues
in our communities, and
neighborhoods are troublesome
exasperations. Confusion
and chaos grows within
the community orchestra.
It is time for our legislators
to become quality conductors
and properly lead. They
must kindly and logically
amend the sheet music, pick
up their batons and lead us in
harmonious melodies.
IRONY, CITY HALL STYLE
Thankfully halted by Governor
Cuomo’s last minute executive
order, the previously
CV- 19 related, postponed New
York City 2020 lien sale was
scheduled to move forward
Sept. 4. Reports by Patch.
com and Kings County Politics
indicate moments after
the Governor Cuomo’s’ executive
order, to save face,
Mayor de Blasio announced a
delay until Sept. 25.) Approximately
4,700 one to three family
homes including multiple
dozens in the CB 10 footprint
were on the block. Despite appeals
for postponement from
over fi fty elected offi cials our
mayor citing the properties
pre-COVID fi nancial distress
and a potential $57 million
in NYC revenue authorized
the action.
On the topic of pre-COVID
distress: New York City is in
an economic quandary. Various
sources, including the
NYTimes, estimate New York
City with a potential $9 billion
budget shortfall. According
to reliable news sources
including NBC, the fi rst confi
rmed case of COVID-19 in
NYC occurred March 1, 2020.
The broad-spectrum effects
of CV-19 offer NYC a perfect
alibi for any and all fi scal distress.
March 2019, pre-COVID,
Milton Ezrad, chief economist
at Vested, stated, “The city is
running a defi cit…already in
a fi nancial spot but would be
in a diffi cult fi nancial situation
with any kind of setback.”
Additionally, Paul C. Earle
of the American Institute
for Economic Research remarked,
“New York City could
go bankrupt…absolutely.”
2019 reports showed city
spending had climbed over
30% during Mayor de Blasio’s
time in offi ce. An increase in
city jobs, city pensions and
social policies all affected
this trajectory.
New York City’s compassion
and generosity toward
undocumented immigrants
is not a de Blasio exclusive. In
1989 Mayor Ed Koch through
executive order gave undocumented
immigrants some
measures of protection. During
a 1996 Minneapolis speech
Mayor Rudy Giuliani defended
the Koch policy. Giuliani
stated, “There are times
when undocumented immigrants
must have a substantial
degree of protection.” It
appears benevolence and compassion
is an integral part of
the NYC fabric.
New York City fundraising
efforts to meet impending
fi nancial shortfalls requires
State permission. An
unenthusiastic response from
New York State could result
in tough decisions and devastating
hardships including
municipal worker layoffs.
Historically, during critical
times, at great expense,
New York City has been compassionate
toward undocumented
immigrants. In a show
of indifference during tough
fi nancial times, Mayor de Blasio
turned a deaf ear to the
plight of approximately 4,700
NYC small property owners
facing lien sales because of
pre-COVID fi nancial distress.
Despite his indifference,
Mayor de Blasio expects understanding
and compassion
from New York State
legislators for fundraising
permission to cover potential
shortfalls partially due to pre-
COVID fi nancial distress.
New York State Governor
Andrew Cuomo’s eleventh
hour executive order, which
preceded the Mayor’s face saving
attempt, has temporarily
halted the NYC lien sale. In
addition, Governor Cuomo is
likely to play a vital role helping
New York City during
this time of fi nancial distress.
Another example of irony,
City Hall style.
Monthly meetings are
postponed until further notice.
