Greek revolution bicentennial discussion on modern odyssey on Bronxnet
Greeks around the world celebrate
the country’s day of independence
on March 25. This
year, the bicentennial (1821-
2021) of the Greek Revolution
means even greater cause for
extended celebration. To help
viewers understand the reason
behind the celebration, Modern
Odyssey host Dr. Despina
Afentouli sat down with Greek
history experts Professor Napoleon
Maravegias and Professor
Kostas Ifantis for a discussion
on the revolution and the
connection to the modern Hellenic
state and the world-impact.
The professors provide
historical lessons on the fi ght
that led to freedom from approximately
400 years of Ottoman
rule, along with interesting
highlights such as the fact
that Haiti was the fi rst country
to recognize Greece’s independence
and the Hellenes’ right to
self-determination.
