The Association is saddened
by Councilman Mark Gjonaj decision
not to seek re-election.
The community will lose a true
advocate. While others are more
concerned with political agendas
Mark did the will of the people.
He asked the community
their wishes and then he put the
full force of his offi ce behind our
concerns. He never took the politically
expedient route. A perfect
example was the proposed
low-cost housing earmarked for
Blondell Ave. He warned that if
the community rejected the proposal
there was a chance the
city would construct a homeless
shelter. Some in the community
called him a traitor and
demanded he fi ght the low-cost
housing proposal, which he did.
The proposal was defeated. Now
he is fi ghting alongside community
members to stop the construction
of not one but 2 homeless
shelters in our community.
Not once did he say “I told you
so,” he just joined us in our
new fi ght. Where are the other
elected offi cials we voted into offi
ce? It seems they faded into the
woodwork. When Mark leaves offi
ce who will fi ght our fi ght? Who
will stand up and represent the
will of the community and not
their own political agenda? We
lost Richie Torres and now Mark
Gjonaj. We lost Richie to Congress
where I hope he doesn’t get
caught up in partisan politics
and continues to do what’s right
for the people of this country. We
lost Mark to the frustration of
party politics and not being able
to affect change to help his community.
I just hope whom ever
fi lls his seat will be as available
and as dedicated as he has been
to this community.
What’s happening in our
nursing homes is a national disgrace.
Our senior relatives and
friends have been locked down
over a year in nursing homes;
in many cases also isolated from
each other for fear of contagion.
Our nursing home residences
and the staff have all been inoculated
so why aren’t they allowed
visits by family members?
Right now, visitation is limited
and only through a window.
Example -you call make an appointment
then stand outside
and visit your loved one viewing
them through a window. Any
psychologist will tell you isolation
for the elderly is paramount
to a death sentence. The lack of
socialization is putting a strain
on their mental acuity.
The Morris Park Community
Association morns the passing
of Pat Quaranta a lifelong resident
of Morris Park. Pat was a
past President of the Association
and one of it’s founding members.
Our prayers go out to his
family.

Well that was a pretty good
Zoom meeting, some technical
diffi culties but still good.
We’ll advise you of the March
meeting, hopefully in person
and what’s happening for St.
Patrick’s Day activities.
Good to see Tony F., keep
fi ghting buddy.
Congrats to Commander
Gene and Adj. Colleen for
stepping up to keeping
Bronx County Legion strong.
Thanks to the Auxiliary for
continuing to send hundreds
of morale packages to those
deployed overseas even in
these diffi cult times!
This season I would like
the SAL to continue with
Americanism, noting fl ags
needing replacement, maybe
adding the POW-MIA Flag
too. We did a handful and
I’m sure more will be beat up
by the winter weather. And
thank your neighbors for fl ying
our fl ag correctly.
Sick call: Contact with
my team member/wife’s recruit
William revealed he
had lost his son. I sent card
on our behalf. Angelo, SAL
Historian, my right hand
Bronx Veterans Museum curator
and kid’s class instructor
needs our sincere prayers
right now.
Americanism, fl ag etiquette,
kids classes are all
important functions of our
family, especially for Sons
and Junior Auxiliary. They
need to know and spread the
truth, they will inherit the
mess we made and will be the
future of this country!
Until Next Time: It’s not
a failure if you learn something
from it.
