On Dec. 22, The Center for Hyperbaric
Medicine and Wound
Healing at St. Barnabas Hospital
donated socks to the Sammon
Build Center, a shelter in the
Bronx.
This was in part of the “Every
Sole Deserves a Sock” drive and
the hospital collected over 1,000
pairs of socks to distribute to vulnerable
communities.
“I was told that socks are one
of the most requested items in the
winter for the less fortunate,” said
Hope Toscano, program director
at Sammon Build Center. “These
socks help to prevent frostbite and
even amputation. Those with diabetes
who suffer from neuropathy,
lose nerve function and do not feel
the irritations. The skin breaks
down and this leads to a nonhealing
wound that can infect the
bones, leading to an amputation.”

For the past 6 years, the Secret Sandy Claus Project worked to make sure as
many children as possible can have the experience of Santa Claus visiting them
for Christmas. The initiative has distributed thousands of toys to less fortunate
children throughout New York City, and this year marked the third year in the
Bronx. On Christmas weekend, Bronx bike advocates put on their Santa suits
and pedaled to distribute more than 150 gifts to 45 Bronx families.
