BRONX TIMES REPORTER, N BTR OV. 19-25, 2021 47
BY AL D’ANGELO
Have we lost our collective
minds? We are considering
giving $450,000 to illegal immigrants,
who were separated
from their children when they
crossed the border. There are
more than 37 million people
living below the poverty level
($26,000 for a family of four)
in America. Who cares about
them?We have senior citizens
living on fi xed incomes, 5 million
of them living in poverty.
We have veterans struggling
to make ends meet and there
are more than 500,000 Americans
who are homeless; yet we
seem to care more about people
who break our laws and
come here illegally. Illegal
immigration costs American
taxpayers $116 billion dollars
a year, that’s after subtracting
what is paid in taxes by illegals.
How do we justify this
to our inner-city communities
which are struggling with
poverty, education and health
issues?
I liken this to parents who
feed their neighbors while
their own children starve.
The demonstrators who entered
the U.S. Capitol should
be punished but so should
the members of ANTIFA who
caused $2.3 million worth of
damage to federal buildings
in Portland, Oregon, and assaulted
federal offi cers. Why
isn’t there equal treatment
under the law and why did
the media downplay Portland
and play up what happened at
the Capitol?Why was an unarmed
protester killed and
no outcry from the press or
BLM, who posted online that
the protester deserved to be
shot. Funny when the shoe
is on the other foot the rules
change. Wrong is wrong and
justice should be color blind
as well as politically neutral.
We must say no to the forces
that attempt to divide us using
race rhetoric.Not one day
goes by when someone in the
media or in politics doesn’t
uses race to try to enhance
their political agenda. It only
puts walls between us; the
walls Martin Luther King
Jr., gave his life to tear down.
Why hasn’t his name been
mentioned or his philosophy
embraced? Will we be tearing
down his statues soon because
he was not radical enough for
the present-day narrative?We
are losing our way and only
we can make a change, but
we can’t do that sitting home
complaining. Register to vote,
call an elected offi cial, and
leave a message about your
concerns. Radicals vote and
elected offi cials will cater to
them if it keeps them in offi
ce. Less than 25% of eligible
voters voted in our last election.
Unless we realize the
importance of our vote we
are doomed to the will of the
radical fringe. We must come
back to the mainstream of
American society and whichever
candidate serves that
purpose should get our vote
regardless of political party.
Veterans put their lives on
hold to defend this country,
the least we can do is see it’s
not given away at the polling
booth.

the Sam Young Post. Hope
you are all well and getting
ready for the holidays. What
a grand Bronx Veterans Day
parade last Sunday. One of
the largest I’ve seen in a long
time.
Thank you Post 1456 for
the breakfast. Plenty of red,
white and blue was fl ying in
the air. Even the children
wore it well. Very patriotic.
Afterwards over to the
Bronxonia for some eats. A
good time had by all.
On behalf of Cmdr. Bill
Franklin and his vice commanders,
we are wishing you
all a Happy Thanksgiving.
Keep the veterans in your
prayers. And, if you didn’t
have enough to eat on turkey
Thursday, join us on Black
Friday, Nov. 26 at 3 p.m. in
celebrating the start of the
holiday season with “The
Black Friday BBQ.” A $10 donation
gets you in and fed,
cash bar.
On Sunday Nov. 28, (as if
we haven’t had enough to eat)
we are hosting the annual
post-Thanksgiving brunch
starting at 2 p.m. This event
is sponsored by our friend
Eddie. Let us know if you are
coming.
In closing, I found an old
Bronx Times Reporter article
from 1992 regarding
Post 620. Did you know that
Samuel Young was a Medal
of Honor winner who died in
France in 1918. That William
Bible accepted the American
Legion Charter in France in
1919. That Post 620 was incorporated
in 1937. The insurance
policy of Carl O. Johnson,
a World War II veteran,
paid for the start of the S.H.
Young Memorial Building
and grounds. The mortgage
was procured through the
Bronx Savings Bank and the
cornerstone was laid in 1948.
The building plans called
for three fl oors, but only two
were built. Members were
asked to buy a brick for $1,
to help pay the mortgage.
And now you know. Happy
Thanksgiving to all the readers
of the Bronx Times Reporter.

Our community has
united around an extremely
important cause which is to
defeat the Bruckner upzoning.
We can succeed if everyone
gets involved. There
is something for everyone to
do, so we ask that you commit
to getting involved in
some way. We are still collecting
signatures on petitions.
We will bring petitions
to your door. Just call me at
718-792-6385. If you haven’t
donated, you can do so by
sending a check made out to
Bronx Coalition Against Upzoning.
Send the check to me
at 1145 Hobart Ave. Bronx
NY 10461. If you have an idea
for a fundraiser, please let us
know. We want you to be involved
and we want to hear
your ideas.
Debbie Teska had a great
idea. She is organizing a car
rally to let our neighbors
know about the proposed upzoning.
Yes, there are still
people that have not heard of
the proposal to upzone our
community. The car rally
will also let the principals of
the proposal know that we
will continue fi ghting until
we win. She invites you to
join the rally which will begin
at 11 a.m. on Nov. 21. We
will meet in front of Veteran’s
Park on the service road.
There we will decorate the
cars with signs, balloons or
anything else that will call
attention to our cause. Sometime
before noon, Debbie will
lead the procession through
the streets of our community
as she speaks on her bullhorn
explaining to all that we will
fi ght the Bruckner upzoning,
and any other upzoning proposed
for our community. We
must keep this issue in the
forefront of everyone’s mind
and this is a fun way to do it.
Please join us and bring your
friends with you. In case of
rain, the rally will be postponed.
Our next civic association
meeting will be on Nov. 30
at 7:30 p.m. at the Lutheran
Church on Hollywood and
Baisley avenues. The staff
of Ridgewood Bank will be
joining us to discuss ways to
make your money work for
you. It’s always an interesting
and informative presentation
and they always come with
some giveaways. We have
also invited the captain of the
45th Precinct to join us. Capt.
Isaac Soberal will join us at
either our November or December
meeting as his schedule
allows. So, start getting
your questions ready.
Until then, please stay safe
and stay involved.

Our thanks go out to Capt.
Isaac Soberal who came to
our last meeting. It was great
to meet him and he took decisive
action on some issues presented
that night.
Our last meeting for 2021
will take place on Tuesday,
Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. at the
beautiful Villa Barone. Our
guest speaker will be Councilwoman
elect Marjorie Velázquez,
who will tell us about
her goals for representing us
in the 13th Council District.
We look forward to hearing
from her.
The executive board of TNHOA
wishes all a very Happy
Thanksgiving.
On behalf of you all, we
have donated $200 to help provide
turkeys for veterans in
need for Thanksgiving. We
thank Judy Lanci for helping
to organize this every year.
We have also donated $200
to Maeve Ryan’s Operation
Christmas Child to help with
postage for her project and the
executive board also voted to
donate $300 to help stop the
upzoning on Bruckner Boulevard.
