OBITUARY
Catherine, daughter of Alice and Joseph, sister of Raymond, Edward and Robert, and aunt and great
auntie to many nephews and nieces, was born in the family house on Leland Avenue in the Bronx where she
lived all her long life.
Proud of her mother's German heritage, Catherine was a Lutheran as well as a committed neighbor.
Being the only girl in the family, she took on added responsibilities. During the Great Depression, while her
brothers were off with their father and his steamroller paving roads around New York City, Catherine helped
Nana stretch resources and keep the family surviving.
She thought nothing of hiking with brothers and friends all the way to the Bronx Zoo for an outing and
to any beach for a swim. Always a lean and athletic sports enthusiast, Catherine roller skated, ice skated,
played shuffleboard and, most of all, loved swimming. Her fond, cherished memories over the years were of
happy days spent with friends at Shore Haven Beach Club, the neighborhood swim club and resort at the end
of Soundview Avenue.
Graduating from the Bronx Vocational High School in 1944 and while her brothers were off to the Navy
and Marines, Catherine joined government service in 1943 at the Veterans Administration. She transferred in
1948 to the Federal Aviation Administration where she rose through the ranks for another 36 years, winning
awards, commendations and a “Sustained Superior Performance Award” as the Personnel Staffing Specialist.
She set records for attendance and retired with over 4000 hours, literally years, of vacation pay and sick time.
Her devotion to the office was happily interrupted by trips to California, Florida and an adventurous grand
tour of Europe by Volkswagen through France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Czechoslovakia. She also
tried her luck at casinos from Atlantic City to Las Vegas and at several Indian reservations.
Catherine enjoyed old movies, and rainy Sundays were spent on the sofa sharing popcorn. She loved
musical theater and often went to Broadway with friends, and to the annual Radio City Music Hall Christmas
Show, as well as first-run cinema engagements at Radio City and the Midtown movie palaces. She said she
didn’t like cooking, but she made the best homemade French fries, waffles and her loaf cakes were appreciated
all over Clason Point.
In retirement, Catherine took over the family household and homestead helping her elderly parents,
maintaining the lifelong friendships in the neighborhood and at her senior center, helped her middle brother
in his twilight years and rarely missed outings to upstate and Connecticut dinner theaters and casinos.
Catherine’s great generosity helped her family and friends throughout her life, especially her nephews and
nieces. They were her hope for the future, and she was always their loving supporter and cheerleader.
