Spring healthy
tips for seniors
Now that Spring is here—fi nally!—
take advantage of the warmer weather
to get some exercise outside. But make
sure to remember a few key safety
tips.
Always make sure to wear the
proper footwear. Sneakers or shoes
with rubber soles are the best and safest
option to prevent slips and falls on
uneven or slippery ground.
Also make sure to wear the proper
clothing. Spring weather can be
changeable. Wear clothes in lightweight
fabrics and light colors that
have a looser fi t; these will help prevent
you from getting too hot. But also
make sure to bring a lightweight jacket
with you in case it gets cool. Wearing
layers is ideal in case the temperature
changes either down or up.
Remember to stay hydrated and
drink plenty of water when the weather
gets warmer, especially if you are doing
any outdoor activity.
And always wear sunscreen when
you are outdoors, even when it is
cloudy! Sunscreen with SPF between
30 and 50 will keep you protected from
harmful UV rays. Remember to continually
reapply every few hours.
Spring is also a good time to clear
away winter clutter in your home.
Make sure to keep hallways clear and
try to cut down on clutter in your home
to help avoid falls. But don’t try to
move heavy furniture or other objects
on your own; always ask for help!
It is always a good idea to clean
away any dust that has built up and to
get fresh air by opening windows.
Spring is a time when a lot of fresh
fruits and vegetables will begin to be
available in the market. Make sure
to eat a wide variety of colorful fruits
and vegetables, and take advantage of
all the produce that is in season to try
healthy and delicious recipes!

Help protect your
beach this summer
The New York City Department of
Environmental Protection is sponsoring
Volunteer Floatables Beach Surveillance
from May to October, at your favorite
beach, shoreline, one to two hours
after high tide, 20 minutes per week.
You can help prevent beach closures,
monitor near and offshore waters, and
help develop an early warning reporting
system.
Floatables are waterborne waste materials
that fl oat. Styrofoam, balloons
and fi shing line are considered fl oatables.
Raw sewage and medical waste are
also fl oatables.
Help save turtles, birds, fi sh, and
other marine life from ingesting these
items or from being entangled in fi shing
lines and other assorted litter.
You do not have to pick up or touch
anything. To become a monitor, you
just need to record the various types
of debris on your favorite beach or surrounding
waters, once each week during
the season.
DEP needs your help in order to be
aware of potential fl oatable problems
as early as possible. Volunteers will receive
all materials necessary for monitoring,
including letters of authorization
and acknowledgement. If you have
any questions, call Robert Gans, Ozone
Layer LLC, at (917) 658-2380, (212) 889-
4216 or email: ozonelayerllc@me.com
