The Impact of the Pandemic on
Democracy on BronxNet
BY BRONX TIMES
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on democracy, ethics
and the role of technology and artifi cial intelligence in our lives. A noted
thought leader, Christos H. Papadimitriou, a multi-award-winning Donovan
Family Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University and a world-renowned
computer science theorist, will discuss those ideas and more with host
Dr. Despina Afentouli on the Modern Odyssey show on BronxNet. The episode
is being broadcast on Friday, May 28 at 9 p.m.; Saturday, May 29 at 9 a.m. and 3
p.m.; and Tuesday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m., on BronxNet CH 67 Optimum/2133 Fios
and on bronxnet.tv.
The discussion focuses on public and personal healthcare access, social inequalities,
distribution of goods and services, human rights and other aspects of
our lives impacted by the pandemic.
Modern Odyssey Host Dr. Afentouli commented, “The COVID-19 pandemic
revealed defi ciencies in the protection of public health, as well as social inequalities
and lack of accessibility to health goods and services at individual and
global levels. In some cases, in some parts of the world, in the pretext of the protection
of public health, irrelevant excessive measures were imposed, violating
human rights.
This episode of Modern Odyssey is a kind reminder that the preservation of
democracy is the best possible system of government for the prcotection of human
rights for all people.”
“This special episode of Modern Odyssey with Dr. Despina Afentouli is representative
of BronxNet’s commitment to encouraging public discourse around
key issues and sharing ideas from thought leaders with our Bronx audiences.
We encourage you to watch and share your thoughts on the present and future
impact of our current crises as well as how we can work to prevent future
pandemics, on the Modern Odyssey page at www.bronxnet.tv,” said BronxNet
executive director Michael Max Knobbe.
