Samuel Young Post 620 Tell Us What
You Think
BY JOSEPH MONDELLO
Hello my Sam Young Post members.
Greetings to all friends and families
out there too. Well, our Valentine
event went very well; a packed house.
Everyone was treated to homemade
pasta, a bottle of wine, roses for the
ladies and entertainment. Thank you
all for attending. It’s been a long while
since we have done an event like this.
I was thinking about our organization
and what it must have been like back
in the ’40s and ’50s, coming back from
overseas after the war; starting a family,
getting a job, and joining a local
American Legion Post. These returning
home veterans were looking for
someone to talk to, have a drink, and
some comradery. They took this organization
very serious and professional.
And when they held a function, it
would be for more than 300 attendees.
The Samuel H. Young Post may
have been one of the bigger American
Legion Post buildings around. When
you walk into the building today, the
lobby area is still the same as it always
looked from days gone by. It’s both
awesome and historical. A wall full
of unit patches, and legion convention
medals dating back to the ’30s. A room
full of trophies dating back to the
1920s. Photos and artifacts throughout
the building. One can get the feeling
of what it was like 70 years ago.
Guess what’s old once, is new again.
Our beautiful Gold Room has been
tidied up and updated with new window
treatment and looks fantastic.
Start booking your event soon. Call
Jeanette or leave a message at 718-822-
8873, wait for the beep. Some chatter
in the air about hosting a St. Patrick’s
Day celebration on March 17 with a live
band. Keep your eyes on the upcoming
columns.
Continuing with Black History
Month, Bessie Coleman was the fi rst
Black civilian to be a licensed pilot in
the world; Constance Baker Motley
was the fi rst Black woman to serve in
the New York Senate; Gordon Parks
was the fi rst Black staff photographer
at Life Magazine and fi rst Black director
of a Hollywood studio fi lm; and
William Carney, for his heroic actions
during the Civil War received a Medal
of Honor, making him the fi rst Black
soldier to receive the honor. Jack Roosevelt
Robinson was an American professional
baseball player who became
the fi rst African American to play in
Major League Baseball in the modern
era. And now you know.
For God and Country … Peace.

If funeral homes were all the same,
Ours wouldn’t be the family choice
The families of our community so often choose our funeral home. Some come to us to pre-plan
arrangements because we offer all the options and choices they desire. Others come to us at their
time of need seeking guidance, support and the certainty of a funeral service that is correct in
every way. Should your family fi nd itself in need of our services, we hope you’ll make the choice so
many in our community have.
