Scanlan shine’s among the elite

Monsignor Scanlan’s track and
fi eld athletes Hannah Gadpaille
and Jordon Providence continues
to shine among the elite in New
York! On Saturday, January 11th,
they competed in the Molloy Stanner
Games at the New Balance
Armory in Fort Washington NY.
The best of the best from throughout
New York were in attendance!
This was their hardest competition
so far this season. The following
events were contested: 55 meters,
55 meters hurdles, 300, 600,
1000, 1600- and 3200-meters races.
Relays, plus fi eld events. The place
was pack, with standing room
only! Medals were awarded to the
top fi ve athletes in their event / division.
Hannah was able to muscle
out a Silver medal in the Girls
Sophomore 55-meter dash, taking
2nd out of 97 girls. Jordon also
wasn’t going to be denied a medal.
He broke his personal record in the
300- and 600-meters races, earning
a Silver medal! He took 2nd out of
111 athletes in the varsity 300-meter
race. Great job!
Our next meet will be on Saturday,
January 18th, the New Balance
Games at the 168th Street, Armory
in Fort Washington NY and
the Colgate Women’s Games Semi
Finals at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn
NY. Come out and see your future

fun activities. In addition to their annual
workshop making an iconic Wave
Hill chair, Winter Workspace artist
Stephanie Alvarado leads the Family
Art Project and Tali Hinkis’ workshop
explores abstract landscape collages.
And if you’re looking up to increase
your culinary skills, join a spicy cooking
demo on Saturday, January 25.

Workshop series begins: The Wave
Hill Chair: Wave Hill’s inspirational
landscape is complemented by this
iconic Wave Hill Chair. In this twoday
workshop, construct your own
Wave Hill Chair under the guidance
of master woodworker and Wave Hill
Director of Facilities Frank Perrone.
Participants receive step-by-step instructions;
no previous carpentry
skills required, but participants must
attend both sessions. The second day
of this two-session series is Sunday,
January 26, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Space is limited. Price is $240. Wave
Hill members save 10%. Registration
required, online at wavehill.org or at
the Perkins Visitor Center. Wave Hill

26: Family Art Project: Bronx
Photo & Poetry Archive Story: Join
Winter Workspace artist Stephanie
Alvarado in archiving Bronx stories
through photos. Create “choreo-poems”
to help capture the stories of the
people of the Bronx. Archive who you
are in your biological or chosen family
as we look to who we are in the Family
Art Project community and in the
Bronx. Free, and admission to the
grounds is free until noon. Wave Hill

Satuary, January 25: Cooking with
Zing: the Ginger Family (Zingiberaceae):
The ginger family, Zingiberaceae,
includes spicy ginger, cardamom
and turmeric, along with a
number of showy ornamental plants.
Horticultural Interpreter Charles Day
shares a sampling of these tropical
herbs while a chef from Great Performances
demonstrates various ways to
cook with fresh and dried members of
this aromatic plant family. Free with
admission to the grounds. Wave Hill
House, 1 p.m.
Sunday, January 26: Winter Workspace
Art Workshop: Abstract Landscape
Collages: Tour artist Tali Hinkis’
Winter Workspace studio to see
her current work in process, including
panoramic images captured with her
homemade camera. Afterward, create
abstract landscape collages using digital
images of Wave Hill’s winter gardens
and Conservatory. Materials provided.

a Wave Hill Garden Guide for a public
tour of seasonal garden highlights.
