SERVING PARKCHESTER, HUNTS POINT, FORDHAM SOUTH, GRAND CONCOURSE, FORDHAM NORTH, BRONX NORTH, CO-OP CITY
GONE WITH
THE WIND
When the city couldn’t get rid of it quick enough, a ferocious wind
came along and offered a helping hand.
The 300-foot monopole erected at 500 Baychester Avenue was
no match for Mother Nature’s fury on Monday, December 30. On a
day of steady, wind-driven rain the community eyesore toppled to the
ground, sending its recently installed wind turbine crashing into pieces
of twisted metal.
When Assemblyman Michael Benedetto arrived at the scene he
summed up the situation succinctly exclaiming: “Isn’t it ironic that the
wind turbine was blown down by the wind.”
Fortunately, the incident, which occurred around 2 p.m. in the afternoon,
did not kill or maim anyone. The worst casualty, other than the
egos of those who installed the monstrosity against everyone’s opposition,
was a parked car that was fl attened by the pole’s impact.
Work crews spent the remainder of the day removing the debris that
temporarily blocked heavily-used Bartow Avenue.
