BBY BEN BRACHFELD & ARIAMA C. LONG rooklynites have a variety of candidates to
choose from for their next borough president
in this month’s primary election.
Twelve Democratic candidates, representing a wide
ideological and experiential spectrum, are on the
ballot vying to replace incumbent Borough President
Eric Adams, who has been in Borough Hall since 2014
and is currently running for mayor. No Republicans
qualified for the ballot this year in the race.
The Democratic candidates are City
Councilmembers Mathieu Eugene, Antonio
Reynoso, and Robert Cornegy, Assemblymember
Jo Anne Simon, DC37 daycare workers union chief
Rob Ramos, real estate professional Trisha Ocona,
District Leader Anthony T. Jones, bishop Lamor
Miller-Whitehead, public school educator Robert
Elstein, former Brookdale Hospital executive Khari
Edwards, minister Kim Council, and nonprofit
board president Pearlene Fields.
The BP is a largely, but not entirely, ceremonial
position in modern times. The beep serves as a
cheerleader of sorts for the borough, and can use
their position to promote initiatives and projects.
They also appoint the members of the borough’s
Community Boards, and some members of the City
Planning Commission and Panel for Educational
Policy. The beep can also propose legislation, and
has an influential though ultimately advisory say
in land use decisions.
The candidates are listed on the next page, in
alphabetical order by last name.
