Where to mark ‘Mulchfest’ in BK
MULCH IT: Mulchfest is a yearly tradition in which thousands of Brooklynites ditch their
Christmas trees and turn them into mulch for city parks. File photo by Stefano Giovannini
BY BEN VERDE
The most wonderful time of year
has come and gone, and thousands of
Brooklynites are now left with a rotting
tree in their living room.
Thankfully, the tree-huggers at the
Parks Department are transforming
into tree-shredders for the fi rst two
weekends of January, offering Brooklynites
the chance to turn their Christmas
trees into nutrient-rich mulch
that helps nourish the city’s green
spaces, or bring home their own bag of
mulch if they are lucky enough to have
a green space of their own.
The Parks Department along with
the Department of Sanitation has collected
and mulched trees for over 20
years on the heels of the holidays during
a tradition now lovingly referred
to as “Mulchfest.” The city agencies
mulch an average of 25,000 to 30,000
trees annually, with Mulchfest 2020
setting records with over 50,900 trees
eradicated.
