Two towers are quickly
rising next to each other
within spitting distance of
the Barclays Center in Prospect
Heights.
Both are part of Pacifi c
Park, originally known as Atlantic
Yards, the biggest and
most controversial development
project in Brooklyn in
decades, spawning protests,
lawsuits and a documentary
fi lm, “Battle for Brooklyn.”
The fi rst, with an address
of 18 Sixth Ave., at the corner
of Atlantic Avenue, appears
to have 35 of its eventual
51 stories already erected.
The glassy curtain wall has
been installed on fl oors fi ve
through 15.
There will be 858 apartments
once completed, according
to building permits,
with retail on the fi rst three
fl oors, a gym for residents, a
terrace on the 26th fl oor and a
pool and roof deck on the 50th
fl oor. Perkins Eastman is the
architect on the project, and
The Brodsky Organization
and Greenland Forest City
Partners are developing.

When completed, the
building will have a tall,
glassy sheen with a slightly
curved facade on the side
that faces Atlantic Avenue,
according to renderings. It
appears, from a distance, to
rise out of the grassy roof of
the Barclays Center. With
towers ringing it, Barclays
Center is getting harder to
see from the street.
Across Sixth Avenue, a
building at No. 37 (also known
as 662 Pacifi c St.) has topped
out at 28 stories. This one will
have 316 units total, according
to building permits, and
a school that will occupy the
fi rst fi ve fl oors of the building.
Apartments will start on the
sixth fl oor, with a swimming
pool and roof deck on the top
fl oor. Marvel Architects is behind
the design of this building,
and The Brodsky Organization
is the developer.
The look here is more
standard, with a stackable
cube design that is becoming
prominent among sizable developments
in the borough.
Both buildings will contain
a mix of market rate and
affordable units, according
to plans laid out by the developer.
The two buildings are the
latest additions to the slowmoving
and often contested
Pacifi c Park development,
the brainchild of Forest City
Ratner, which has been in
the works since at least 2003.
Back then, the development’s
design was initially going to
be headed up by starchitect
Frank Gehry, who parted
ways with the venture in 2009.
Over a period of years starting
Rendering of 37 Sixth Ave. Marvel Architects
in 2014, other partners
were brought in, and now the
project’s developers comprise
Greenland Forest City Partners,
The Brodsky Organization
and TF Cornerstone.
Of a possible eventual 17
buildings, including Barclays
Center, only fi ve have
so far been completed. The
project has come under fi re
for using eminent domain for
private development and for
its affordable housing. Currently,
the developers have
a legally mandated goal of
building 2,250 affordable
units by 2025.
Two more buildings that
are part of the Pacifi c Park
development, located on
Dean Street between Carlton
and Vanderbilt, started construction
over the summer.
