A hit-and-run driver
left an e-bike rider in
critical condition in
Windsor Terrace early
on Jan. 21.
NYPD offi cers responded
to a 911 call
reporting a collision at
the intersection of 10th
Avenue and 18th Street
just after midnight on
Friday, and arrived to
fi nd the e-bike rider collapsed
on the ground,
unconscious, unresponsive,
and with “severe
body trauma.”
EMS rushed the unidentifi
ed cyclist to
Brooklyn Methodist
Hospital, where he remains
in critical condition.
Cops say the man
was riding south on
10th Avenue and entering
the intersection
when he was struck by
the driver of an SUV
traveling westbound on
18th Street. The driver
fl ed the scene.
The cyclist may be a
delivery driver: Streetsblog
reported that a
Grubhub bag was found
near the scene, as were
the remains of the bike
and gloves often worn
by delivery workers.
Spokespersons for
the NYPD, Grubhub,
and delivery workers
collective Los Deliveristas
Unidos were unable
to confi rm if the man
was a delivery worker
by press time.
Intersections are
some of the deadliest
parts of the city’s
streetscape: 55 percent
of pedestrian deaths
and 79 percent of pedestrian
injuries occur
in intersections, according
to the Department
of Transportation.
Mayor Eric Adams on
Wednesday announced
an initiative to introduce
traffi c calming infrastructure
at 1,000 intersections
citywide.
The mayor also announced
that the city
would start doubling
down on enforcement
of failure to yield violations,
and would start
to enforce a new rule requiring
motorists and
cyclists fully stop at intersections
when a pedestrian
is crossing,
rather than yield, if the
intersection has no stoplights
or stop signs. The
intersection where the
incident occurred has
a stop sign for traffi c on
10th Avenue, but nothing
for 18th Street traffi c.
