A motorist ran over a homeless man
asleep in front of a Coney Island Avenue
parking garage in Midwood early
Monday morning, killing him.
The 49-year-old homeless victim
was likely drunk when he fell asleep at
the entrance to the garage between Avenue
H and Glenwood Road sometime
before 12:35 a.m., when a 65-year-old
man behind the wheel of a 2019 Honda
Odyssey rolled over him on his way
into the parking lot, cops said.
Emergency responders found
the victim suffering a serious head
wound, and transported him to Maimonides
Medical Center in Borough
Park, where he was pronounced dead,
police say.
The driver remained on the scene
and has not been arrested, according
to police, who noted that the investigation
remains ongoing.
The fatality follows the death of
cyclist Jose Alzorriz , who was fatally
struck by a car on Aug. 11 on Coney Island
Avenue and Avenue L, only four
blocks away from Monday’s incident.
Police initially declined to cuff 18-
year-old Queens resident Umar Mirza
Baig, who they say plowed through a
red light and T-boned another car that
slammed into Alzorriz, prompting intense
backlash from safe-street advocates
and elected offi cials including
Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Cops eventually arrested Baig on
Aug. 21 , and he was indicted on a laundry
list of felony charges, including
reckless manslaughter, criminally
negligent homicide, and two-counts of
assault.
De Blasio ordered city transit offi -
cials to rapidly install new safety features
— including pedestrian islands
and new left turn signals, in addition
to lengthening pedestrian crossing
times — at intersections along Coney
Island Avenue in the wake of Alzorriz’s
death.
In July, another pedestrian was
struck and killed in the intersection
of Coney Island and Church avenues
as she was crossing the street when a
2015 Honda struck her while making a
right turn, Bklyner reported .
