More than 24,000 Brooklyn
households lost power
after Tropical Storm Isaias
blew through the borough on
Aug. 4, uprooting thousands
of trees and causing extensive
damage to public and private
property.
Over 24 hours after the extreme
weather event, at least
8,000 borough homes were
still in the dark as Con Edison
workers attempted to fi x
problems with their electric
grid.
With 217,331 outages system
wide at the height of
the blackouts, the damage
wrought by Isaias became
the second largest outage in
the company’s history — behind
only 2012’s Superstorm
Sandy.
Some Brooklyn legislators
noted the disparities between
the relatively unscathed power
grid in Manhattan, where only
a handful of customers lost
power, and the widespread
outages in the four other boroughs
that saw several thousand
blackouts each
“I’m old enough to remember
when 70,000 Manhattan
residents lost power for
fi ve hours in the July 2019
outage, which was national
breaking news,” Coney Island
Councilman Mark Treyger
tweeted. “Over 200,000 outerborough
residents are without
power in a pandemic and
are told it will take days to restore.
Hope things are well in
Manhattan and Hamptons.”
Reps from Con Edison,
however, noted that much of
Manhattan’s power lines are
underground, as they are in
northern Brooklyn — com-
