collapses at Bay
Ridge home
Firefi ghters responded to an 88th Street home on Monday,
June 21 after a section of a second fl oor balcony had collapsed.

A second-fl oor balcony
collapsed at a Bay
Ridge home on June 21,
and the residents were
forced to vacate due to
perceived structural
damage, according to
the city buildings department.
FDNY and Department
of Buildings inspectors
arrived at the
scene to fi nd a portion
of the balcony had collapsed
in front of the single
family home, located
on 88th Street between
Colonial and Ridge Boulevard.
Both agencies reported
no injuries.
A representative from
the Department of Buildings
said the agency’s
inspectors were called
to conduct a structural
stability inspection after
receiving reports the
home’s balcony collapsed
and during their investigation
found the cause to
be sections of the wood
porch were rotting,
There had been no
prior complaints on
the home issued prior
to Monday’s collapse,
though the property
owners were issued a violation
for failing to maintain
the wooden balcony,
according to the buildings
department rep.
The residents were
temporarily rehomed
by the American Red
Cross, and have already
contracted with a professional
engineer who conducted
further inspections
Tuesday morning
to determine what is
needed to be done to
bring the home up to
code, the representative
said.
