Primary elections are June 23
Here’s what Brooklynites need to know for the local races
BY BEN VERDE
Even during the pandemic, democracy
goes on!
On June 23, Brooklynites will head to
the polls — or to their mailboxes — and
vote in a handful of primary elections
for various levels of government.
Absentee Ballots
In an effort to stop the spread of
COVID-19, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed
an executive order making every New
York voter eligible to vote with an absentee
ballot in the June 23 elections.
Any voter requesting an absentee
ballot because of COVID-19 can check
the box marked “Temporary Illness”
as the reason for requesting the ballot.
There are multiple ways to request
an absentee ballot, including:
• Online: www.nycabsentee.com
• Email: AbsenteeJune2020@boe.nyc
• Fax: 212-487-5349
• Call: 1-866-VOTE-NYC
• Mail to a local BOE offi ce
Absentee applications must be submitted
by June 16, although that deadline
is extended to June 22 if the voter
plans on applying in-person at a local

Board of Elections offi ce.
Ballots will be mailed out until the
day before the election, on June 22.
After fi lling out the ballot, the
voter must fold the ballot and put it in
a smaller envelope, sign and date the
back of the envelope, seal it, and put it
in a larger envelope that is addressed
to the Board of Elections.
The ballot can be mailed or delivered
to the voter’s borough Board of
Elections offi ce.
The absentee ballot must be postmarked
by June 22, and must be delivered
to the Board of Elections no more
than seven days after the election in
order to be counted.
If a voter plans to deliver their ballot
to a Board of Elections building,
they are required to wear a face mask
and maintain six feet of social distance
while inside the facility.
Early Voting
As well as voting absentee and inperson
on election day, voters also
have the opportunity to vote early.
“Poll workers will be wearing
masks, physical distancing guidelines
will be in place, voters will be required
to wear masks and masks will be available,”
said Lerner.
Early voting will be held at various
locations throughout Brooklyn
through Sunday June 21. Voters can
head to nyc.pollsitelocator.com/search
to fi nd their polling location.
See the times for early voting below.
• Thursday, June 18 – 10 am to 6 pm
• Friday, June 19 – 7 am to 3 pm
• Saturday, June 20 – 10 am to 4 pm
• Sunday, June 21 – 10 am to 4 pm
Who’s on the ballot?
Voters will head to the polls to
choose candidates for Democratic and
Republican nominations for various
offi ces across several levels of government.
Below are just a handful of the
more hotly-contested elections happening
in Brooklyn:
Incumbent Rep. Yvette Clarke in
NY-9 Congressional District, who
is facing several primary challengers.
Progressive organizer Adem
Bunkedekko, who narollowly lost to
Clarke in 2018, is set for a rematch
against his once-and-current political
rival. Conservative City Councilman
Chaim Deutsch is also running, along
with community activist Isiah James
and small business owner Lutchi
Gayot.
Another establishment fi gure, Rep.
Jerry Nadler, faces a challenge for his
Red Hook seat from both progressive
activist Lindsey Boylan and 25-yearold
former Andrew Yang staffer Jonathan
Herzog.
On the state level, voters will make
their choices in many Senate and Assembly
races — including Assembly
District 43 in Flatbush, where the incumbent
Diana Richardson faces former
Independent Democratic Caucus
member Jesse Hamilton, who lost his
central Brooklyn senate seat to Sen.
Zellnor Myrie in 2018 after caucusing
with Republicans.
State Senate District 25 in Bedford
Stuyvesant is also up for grabs,
after legislative stallworth Velmanette
Montgomery announced her retirement.
Assemblywoman Tremaine
Wright is considered a favorite for the
post, although she faces progressive
challenges from former Montgomery
staffer Jason Salmon and Prospect
Heights educator Jabari Brisport.
