BRIGHTON EYE
February is Age-related
Macular Degeneration
Month
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
is the leading cause of blindness in elderly
Americans older than 55 years old. In AMD,
the macula or the small part of the retina
(the layer of nerve cells lining the back wall
inside the eye) which accounts for our near
vision is affected. Macular degeneration
comes in a dry and wet form. In the dry
form, patients lose important cells in many
of the layers of the retina. In the wet form,
abnormal blood vessels grow under the
retina and leak fl uid and blood. I treat many
patients with macular degeneration every
day in my offi ce. Patients ask the following
questions:
- Is it better to have Dry or Wet Macular
Degeneration: Patients can experience
devastating vision loss in both forms. Right
now we have excellent treatments for wet
AMD especially if we catch the disease early.
In wet macular we can now inject special
medication into the eye that constrict
the abnormal blood vessels and stabilize
the vision. Often treatment has to be given
monthly but now we have a new medication
that hopefully will stabilize the vision
for as long as three months. Dry Macular

Adams continues to
push accessible
at-home COVID-19
testing and vaccines
BY ISABEL SONG BEER
In another effort to beat back the
coronavirus pandemic, Mayor Eric
Adams announced that at-home tests
would be available for pick up starting
Monday at New York City cultural
sites including public libraries and
also reinstated the $100 vaccine initiative
continuing to the end of the
month.
At-home tests are available for
pickup at 14 cultural sites across the
Five Boroughs such as the American
Museum of Natural History as well
as participating New York public libraries.
A full list of locations can be
found at the NYC Health and Hospitals
website.
In addition to the new at-home
testing pick up locations, Mayor Adams
announced the return of the $100
vaccine incentive which ends Feb. 28.
Anyone receiving their fi rst vaccine
or booster is eligible for the $100 gift
card which will be available at all
city-run COVID vaccination locations

as well as SOMOS community care
sites.
“Vaccination and boosters, that
is our most potent weapon against a
virus that is really a formidable opponent,”
said Adams during a press conference
Monday. “It shifts, it changes,
it comes out with new variants and it
is crucial that people are vaccinated
and boosted.”
The gift cards are available to New
Yorkers until the end of the month
and will be available for use until
they expire March 31.
To bolster the city’s economy, the
mayor is encouraging individuals
who receive the gift cards to use them
at small businesses to help them rebound
and rebuild after being hard
hit by the pandemic.
Supporting small and local businesses
will help keep the economy
af loat, but will also serve to encourage
businesses to hire more
individuals and expand upon their
services

degeneration is the more common form of
the disease. Unfortunately there is no treatment
for this form of the disease right now.
That may change in the near future.
- Should I use daily vitamins? I fi nd that
many patients are using vitamins for a variety
of diseases. It has only been shown that
vitamins help deter the progression of AMD
by 25% in one small portion of patients with
macular disease. Only your ophthalmologist
can tell you if you are a candidate for
vitamins.
- I have AMD and a cataract. Can cataract
surgery help restore my vision? Can
cataract surgery make my vision worse?
This is a discussion that every patient has
to have with their ophthalmologist. Your
doctor will determine which is affecting
your vision more. Often cataract surgery
will greatly improve a patient’s vision as
more light is let into the eye when the cataract
is taken out. Patients with wet AMD
may require treatment for their AMD prior to
having cataract surgery.
