Sweet Summer
New Dough Doughnuts location brings
homemade desserts to Astoria
A new location of the nationally
recognized dessert shop
Dough Doughnuts debuted
Astoria on Saturday, May 29,
with a grand opening celebration
that drew long lines
of customers and featured a
signature Astoria flavor.
“Astoria is just a great neighborhood,”
owner Steve Klein told BORO
Magazine. “It’s a family area. It’s a
young neighborhood. … It’s a hub.”
The store, located on Ditmars Boulevard
and 31st Street, allows customers
to see the doughnut-making process
through the window, as do all of
Dough’s five other locations, making
it one of the only doughnut chains in
that nation to show customers how the
doughnuts are actually made.
“The experience is unbelievable,
because it’s basically making a doughnut
based on a glaze,” Klein said. “You
actually see the whole process of the
doughnut being dipped into the fresh
glaze and dripping.”
All Dough Doughnuts are handmade
in small batches throughout
the day, from the brioche dough to
the jams and glazes, according to
the chain’s website.
Klein said that, while all locations
offer 16 to 24 flavors of doughnut
at any given point in time, some of
the most popular offerings are the
plain glazed, cinnamon sugar, dulce
de leche and Nutella doughnuts,
though it was their hibiscus flavor
that attracted so much attention to
the brand.

The stores also offer special seasonal
flavors that are only available
at certain points throughout the
year. For June, the temporary flavors
are violet and black currant; strawberries
and cream; and margarita.
Dough celebrated its Queens
opening with a special Astoria flavor,
cherry Greek yogurt, a sour
cherry-infused yogurt parfait on top
of the chain’s signature briochestyle
dough, topped with chopped
walnuts and finished with rose water
and mint. The first 500 opening
day customers who purchased six
doughnuts walked away with a free
Dough Doughnuts T-shirt.
While the chain has been expanding
in the boroughs recently, Dough
has also made sure to give back to the
community, donating 13,000 doughnuts
to the city’s public and private
