BEGINNING

If you stood in Mary Hould’s
apartment, you’d think she were
a lifelong New Yorker.
Hould, in fact, moved to New
York City in July. She was born
in Montana but spent the past
decade or so in Washington,
where she practiced acting and
singing. She moved to New York for
more opportunities in the field.
She spent a brief period subletting
an Astoria apartment after she
arrived, then moved into her own
space in Sunnyside in August. Hould
told me that her one-bedroom
apartment is still not fully furnished,

but it already houses trinkets that
pay homage to her new home.
On her fridge lies a bold purple
magnet with the number 7,
referencing the subway line that
crosses through Queens into
Manhattan. Also on that fridge is a
magnet of the Unisphere, the iconic
globe that towers proudly in Queens’
Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
In the living room hangs an art
print that features the Queensboro
Plaza subway station, with both the
N and the 7 pulled up side by side.
But beyond the Queens-centric
trinkets, Hould’s apartment has
