Over the next four years, as chefs changed, so did the menu. Sandwiches came and went, as did various desserts. I tried their Jewish-Chinese dinners, came for tastings of specialty beers and ciders, and learned about a classic blend of infused vinegar and soda called a shrub. But those first bites I initially savored have always remained on the menu, and hopefully always will. March marked the fourth anniversary of The Queens Kickshaw, but also the opening of Ben and Jen’s second restaurant—this time in Manhattan. One of the things I love most about living Chocolate Ganache here is watching our businesses expand into new locations, and observing businesses that were built elsewhere moving into my neighborhood. Taverna Kyclades, Vesta Trattoria, Bareburger, MP Taverna, Il Bambino, Tacuba, and Sweet Afton, Blend, and Petey’s immediately come to mind as some pretty special success stories. So, as we celebrate the anniversary of one restaurant that has brought a lot of attention to Astoria for its outstanding coffee program, delicious menu, and exceptional service, I thought it would be a great opportunity to introduce you to their newest concept—Wassail—New York City’s first cider bar appropriately located on Orchard Street. Ben and Jen have teamed with Sabine Hrechdakian to create a place where Scotch Egg patrons can both learn about and enjoy nearly every type of cider imaginable, as well as devour elegant plates from Chef Joseph Buenconsejo, and sophisticated desserts from Pastry Wassail Chef Rebecca Eichenbaum. I am merely suggesting that if your travels take you into town, perhaps consider patronizing a lovely couple who still call Astoria their home.
