DRINK &FOOD Queens Kickshaw's Cheddar & Mozzarella 18 | BOROMAG.COM | APRIL 2015 Wassail Story & Photos by Bradley Hawks I took that photograph of the toasted Cheddar & Mozzarella at The Queens Kickshaw on March 27, 2011 just a day after they had opened. I had just started freelancing for BORO Magazine, and owners Ben Sandler and Jennifer Lim both warmly greeted me at the table. Any food that transports me to childhood will always be a winner in my books, because few things can lift you from the chaos of the moment quite like good ol’ fashioned nostalgia. Because I always start with the basics, I knew the Cheddar & Mozzarella would be the perfect place to begin. If they could properly execute a classic, then their other sandwiches might also be worthy of a try. I kept dipping my sandwich into the tomato soup and grinning. Within seconds, the first half of my grilled cheese was nothing but a memory. My friend had ordered the Gouda, and I remember chuckling when I tried a bite—it was a sandwich that actually made me smile. The sweet guava jam, smooth black bean hummus, tangy and crunchy pickled jalapenos, and buttery brioche all sang to me in perfect harmony. English Pea Cremeux Doughnut Holes
