This month is all about local love — not only our
love for our partners, friends and family members, but
also our love for western Queens itself. Our neighbors,
local businesses and frontline workers have helped
Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside survive this
challenging time. I’ve lived in Astoria for almost eight
years, and I’ve always felt that this neighborhood is a
true community. Even now, after nearly a year of social
distancing, I still feel that same spirit.
As we do each February, we tracked down local
couples who met, got engaged or got married in
western Queens. Their love stories are filled with first
dates at local restaurants, engagements in Astoria
Park and — for the first time this year — a plethora of
intimate backyard weddings. Plus, each couple shares
five of their favorite neighborhood date spots (page 14).

We also chatted with western Queens singles about
how dating has changed during the pandemic. Locals
shared the challenges of looking for love during
COVID-19, and a relationship expert let us in on some
virtual dating tips (page 26).
