HOW TO REACH US

A woman shows off her vaccine card. HOW TO GET
BY BEN VERDE
The vaccine rollout in New
York has been marked with
confusion, with those eligible
fi nding the process of securing
an appointment for the
life-saving jab onerous and
time-consuming.
In late February, New York
State made offi cial the most
sweeping expansion of eligibility
for the vaccine since the
fi rst immunization was authorized
in late December, allowing
anyone with pre-existing
conditions — such as asthma,
cancer, kidney disease, intellectual
and developmental disorders,
pulmonary disease, or
high blood pressure — to get
the shot, as long as they bring
an attestation to their appointment.
In early March, they further
expanded eligibility, allowing
any adult over the age
of 50 to receive the shot and
on March 30, Gov. Andrew
Cuomo deemed New Yorkers
30 years of age and older vaccine
eligible.
This ostensibly made millions
more New Yorkers eligible
for the vaccine. To present
the process in the simplest
of terms, Brooklyn Paper has
prepared a guide on how to
get the COVID-19 vaccine in
Kings County.
Make sure you’re
eligible
New York State’s rollout
of the vaccine had originally
been conducted in phases, but
has now essentially fi zzled
out. As of March 26, the following
New Yorkers are eligible
for the vaccine:
• Healthcare workers and
residents and staff at longterm
care facilities
• Essential workers including
school staff, grocery store
workers, food service workers,
and taxi drivers
• In-person college faculty
and essential staff and essential
building service workers
• Public-facing government
employees and non-profi t
workers
• Those over 30 and those
with pre-existing conditions
All residents 16 and older
will be eligible on April 6,
Cuomo said on March 29.
As of March 30, New York
City had administered nearly
4 million doses of the Moderna,
Pfi zer and Johnson &
Johnson vaccines. (You can
track this in live time here.)
To date, more than 28 percent
of Brooklynites have received
at least one dose of the
vaccine, while 13 percent are
fully vaccinated, according
to the city. Statewide, health
offi cials have administered
a total of more than 9 million
doses.
How to get the
COVID-19 vaccine
appointment
While both city and state
offi cials say the vaccine is the
key to recovery, critics claim
they haven’t exactly made the
process for securing an appointment
easy. The city and
state have separate websites
for their separately run vaccination
sites, and both have
proved to be clunky and confusing,
especially for the older
and less technologically inclined.
