Seafood spot serves red sauce Sunday suppers
By Bill Roundy It’s a red sauce renaissance!
A waterfront seafood
brasserie has added a retro
family-style Italian meal to its
menu for this month. Sunday
Suppers at Estuary, a restaurant at
the base of Brooklyn Bridge Park’s
Pier Five, feature a giant plate
of pasta, just like Mama used to
make, according to the chef.
“I wanted it to feel like a kind
of 1940s dinner in Greenpoint,”
said Danny Brown, who opened
Estuary with culinary director
Francois Payard last summer.
The simple Sunday night meals
start with a salad with Italian
dressing, followed by a giant plate
of spaghetti served with “Sunday
Gravy,” a Neapolitan tomato
ragu swimming with meatballs,
sausage, and braciole — thin slices
of rolled, braised pork. It comes
with garlic bread, two glasses of
red wine, and biscotti for dessert.
The dinners started in January,
and they have been popular with
families, said Brown.
The meals are not only a
throwback to traditional family
meals, but to a staple dish served
at Brown’s previous restaurant,
Danny Brown Wine Bar and
Kitchen in Queens, the first eatery
in that borough to earn a Michelin
star.

The host of the
comedic dating show
“Tinder Live! with Lane Moore”
says that next week’s show —
which takes place on Valentine’s
Day — will have an exciting extra
energy because of the holiday.
“There’s going to be a specific
vibe — it’s either the horniest
day or the most romantic day
of the year, depending on your
perspective,” said Lane Moore.
During the show, which has
been running monthly since 2013,
Moore uses the Tinder dating
app live, chatting with dudes
and projecting the results onto a
screen. Those willing to start a
new relationship on Valentine’s
Day are a special breed, she
noted.
“It’s casting an interesting
net,” she noted. “The guys that we
talk to on Tinder on Valentine’s
Day — it’s elevated, you have that
extra gravity.”
And for the audience, going
to a comedy show on the Day
of Romance can be a nice break
from the pressures of the holiday,
said Moore.
“It’s doing something that’s
a little less heavy, and little bit
more fun and playful,” she said.

of Valentine’s Day events
this month for everyone:

and for those who are
single and ready to mingle! This
roundup of screenings, readings,

Bad romance
The micro-cinema Spectacle
in Williamsburg offers some
counter-programming with an
“Anti-Valentine’s 2020” film
series of twisted love stories with
a twinge of horror, screening all
month. Among the not-so-sweet
lovers are “Psychos in Love”
(Feb. 14 and 22) about a bloodthirsty
couple competing to outmurder
one another, the horror
spoof “Unmasked,” (Feb. 13
and 14), about the bond between
a deformed serial killer and a
blind woman, and W. Somerset
Maugham’s melodrama of doomed
romance “Of Human Bondage”
(Feb. 12 and 16).
“Anti-Valentines 2020” at
Spectacle (124 S. Third St.
between Berry Street and Bedford
Avenue in Williamsburg, www.
spe c t a c le t h e a t e r.com/an t i -

Feb. 13, where your $25 ticket gets
you a cocktail and a new romance
novel. The night will also feature a

writers, along with trivia, games,
and giveaways!

at 7 pm. $25.
For the hotties
Get hot and steamy with your
special someone — and some nearly
naked others — at Brooklyn’s only
Russian bathhouse dance party on
Valentine’s night. Cruise over to
Brooklyn Banya in Kensington,
where you can soak, let off some
steam on the dance floor, and then
refresh yourself with an appetizer
spread of Russian specialties —
and an open vodka bar!
“Steamy Valentine’s Night at
the Russian Baths” at Brooklyn
Banya (602 Coney Island Ave.
between Beverley Road and Avenue
C in Kensington, banyaparty.

7 pm, 9 pm, or 11 pm. $40–$65.
Queer it up
Shake your can-can at the
queer dance party “Voulez-voux?
Encore!,” which pays tribute
to the Moulin Rouge and Belle
Epoque Paris. Bring your partner,
or come single and meet someone
new on the dance floor, where
costumed figures will launch
into choreographed routines
alongside the audience, between
performances by drag queens,
dancers, and musicians.
“Voulez-vous? Encore!” at
3 Dollar Bill (260 Meserole St.
between Bushwick Avenue and
Waterbury Street in Bushwick,
www.theatrec.org/retro-factory).
Feb. 14 at 9:30 pm. $45.
For the romantic
Stop by the Brooklyn Academy
of Music for the film portion of
the traditional V-Day dinner-and-amovie
date. All weekend, the Rose
Cinema will host “Long Weekend of
Love,” a slate of films that celebrate
romance in all its forms. The movie
series opens with “The Philadelphia
Story” on Valentine’s Day, the
Hollywood classic featuring a love
triangle between Audrey Hepburn,
Cary Grant, and Jimmy Stewart
(well, between their characters). On
Feb. 14, the series will also feature
the iconic lesbian love story “Desert
Hearts.”
For a romantic dinner before or
after the show, check out prix fixe
specials at Brooklyn Winery in
Williamsburg, Bacchus in Boerum
Hill, or stay at home an order a
heart-shaped pizza dinner for two
from Fornino in Greenpoint.
“Long Weekend of Love” at
BAM Rose Cinema (30 Lafayette
Ave. between St Felix Street and
Ashland Place in Fort Greene,
www.bam.org). “The Philadelphia
Story” on Feb. 14 at 4:30 pm and
9:30 pm. “Desert Hearts” on Feb.
14 at 7 pm. $16.
