NewYork-Presbyterian
Queens Hospital in Flushing
has received the Mission:
Lifeline Gold Receiving Quality
Achievement Award for
implementing specific quality
improvement measures outlined
by the American Heart
Association for the treatment
of patients who suffer severe
heart attacks.
The hospital — affiliated
with Weill Cornell Medicine
serving Queens and metro
New York residents — earned
the award by meeting specific
criteria and standards of performance
for quick and appropriate
treatment through
emergency procedures to reestablish
blood flow to blocked
arteries in patients suffering
a heart attack coming into
the hospital directly or by
transfer from another
facility.
“NewYork-Presbyterian
Queens is dedicated to providing
the highest quality care
for heart attack patients,”
said David Slotwiner, chief
of the Division of Cardiology
at NewYork-Presbyterian
Queens and an assistant professor
of clinical medicine and
of clinical healthcare policy
and research at Weill Cornell
Medicine. “We are pleased to
be recognized for our dedication
and achievements in cardiac
care through Mission:
Lifeline.”
Every year, more than
250,000 people experience an
ST elevation myocardial infarction
(STEMI), the deadliest
type of heart attack,
caused by a blockage of blood
flow to the heart that requires
timely treatment. To prevent
death, it’s critical to restore
blood flow as quickly as possible,
either by mechanically
opening the blocked vessel
or by providing clot-busting
medication.
The American Heart Association’s
Mission: Lifeline
program’s goal is to reduce
system barriers to prompt
treatment for heart attacks,
beginning with the 911 call, to
EMS transport and continuing
through hospital treatment
and discharge.
The initiative provides
tools, training and other resources
to support heart attack
care following protocols
from the most recent evidencebased
treatment guidelines.

Over 100 donors participated
in state Assemblyman
Edward Braunstein’s Eighth
Annual Summer Blood Drive
at the Bay Terrace Shopping
Center in conjunction with
the New York Blood Center on
Aug. 6.
The blood drive took place
at 212-51 26th Ave., the former
site of the American Eagle
Outfitters store, where Braunstein
also donated blood and
said there is an urgent need
for blood donors.
“Thanks to the overwhelming
generosity of over
100 northeast Queens residents
who participated in
our blood drive, more than
300 lives will be saved,”
Braunstein said. “I would
like to express my gratitude
to the New York Blood Center
for its continuing partnership,
and to the Cord Meyer
Development Company’s Bay
Terrace Shopping Center
for providing a large space
that allowed for ample social
distancing.”
To remain in compliance
with the guidelines for social
distancing, donations were
scheduled by appointment
only. In order to donate blood,
donors must be 14 days symptom
free if recovered from
COVID-19, and may not donate
if they have had a positive diagnostic
test or experienced
symptoms of COVID-19 in the
last 14 days.
Donors were also instructed
to not donate if they are
currently on self-quarantine
restrictions.
The New York Blood Center
has officially declared a blood
emergency since supplies have
dropped below required minimums,
even for the seasonally
low summer months, according
to its website. While they
seek to maintain a seven- to
nine-day supply, its local blood
supply has reached a critically
low level.
The center is encouraging
people of all blood types to
come and donate, and there
is an especially critical need
for O negative and B negative
blood types.
For medical questions concerning
blood donations, call
800-688-0900.
