BILLY DONOVAN, 82
Bayside denizen Billy Donovan died
shortly after dawn on January 18th
in the home he loved in Palm Beach
Gardens, Florida. His sisters Dolly
O’Connor and Clare Casale were
with him as they had been
throughout his brief illness.
He was 82.
William John Donovan was born in Flushing, Queens on October 16, 1938, the fourth child
of Joseph and Margaret (née Hussey) Donovan, of Counties Limerick and Roscommon,
Ireland. Billy graduated Bayside High School then served six years in the US Army,
honorably discharged as a sergeant. He trained as a Mortician’s Apprentice at Quinn
Funeral Home before a career with the New York City Fire Department.
Bayside was home, but never exclusively. Over the course of his life Billy owned houses
in Westchester, Florida, and Vermont, where he built on the site of a former abbey. In
Vermont he pursued an early interest in downhill skiing and what would be a lifelong
love of horses. Billy was a fixture at the polo matches in Wellington after southern
Florida became his Shangri-La in the early 2000’s. He continued to spend summers
in Bayside among family and friends.
If uncles were tenors, Billy was Pavarotti. The committed bachelor adored his fourteen
nephews and two nieces, and eventually their spouses and children. Billy loved sharing
jokes, laughs, and stories with them and always saw they went back to college with a
little beer money. “Every kid needs to have an Uncle Billy,” his brother and best friend
Jack, who died in 2014, often said.
Billy excelled at running restaurants, where his attention to detail and inclination to
take care of people helped attract the staff and regulars that made Donovan’s Pub in
Woodside and later, Donovan’s of Bayside New York institutions. After the dinner rush,
Billy would hold court at a table full of entertaining storytellers
where he’d be his happiest.
Billy is survived by his sisters Peggy (Emil, deceased), Sister Joan, Dolly (Charlie,
deceased), Clare (Jack, deceased), his brother Joe (Pat), Jack’s widow Irene, myriad
cousins and friends, his nieces and nephews and a passel of their offspring. He was
preceded in death by his sister Chickie and nephew Brian.
There will be a celebration of Billy’s life in a future when it is safe to do so. In lieu of
flowers, please take care of each other and the people who take care of you.
