TIMES, THURSDAY, MAY 22, 2014 • 24 Crossing Guards Feted In Ridgewood For their daily work to keep children safe near local schools, crossing guards assigned to the 104th Precinct were honored in a special way during a ceremony at the Greater Ridgewood Youth Council last Friday, May 16. Assemblyman Mike Miller presented citations to three crossing guards in particular: Linda Wachsmuth, Cathy Paz and Lisa Aimi. Other crossing guards working at schools located in the 104th Precinct’s confines received certificates of their own. Among those on hand to laud their efforts were Capt. Timothy Brown, executive officer of the 104th Precinct; Det. Thomas Bell of the 104th Precinct Community Affairs Unit; Deputy Inspector Michael Morley; and David Aglialoro, representing Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan. (photo: Marcin Zurawicz) El Khang Wins Integrity Award St. Pancras Students Go For A Walk The St. Pancras School in Glendale held its annual spring Walk-A-Thon Wednesday, May 14. Each student obtained a sponsor who agreed to donate a certain amount of money for each lap around the school. Afterwards, the students said they enjoyed walking around the school to support a good cause. The money raised will go directly to the school to upgrade its technology program. All Aboard For Train Show At Qns. Botanical Garden Rail Exhibit This Holiday Weekend This Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 24 through Monday, May 26, Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) in Flushing will host a World’s Fair Train Show created by the Long Island Garden Railway Society, Inc. The society is one of dozens of organizations across the country that present model railroad layouts placed outside, usually winding through a garden setting. Garden railroading is sometimes described as the marriage of model railroading and gardening. The World’s Fair Train Show will feature fully working “G” scale model trains traveling a track around a scaled-down Unisphere and other iconic features from the 1964 World’s Fair. A popular attraction was the Civil War engine, “The General.” QBG’s Train Show will include a replica of The General, along with other period train cars. The trains will be in operation from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all three days. Opening day Saturday will be especially festive, according to the garden. The whole family is invited to enjoy food vendors, face painting, games, and “trackless train” rides Sunnyside Leader Honored State Sen. Michael Gianaris honored Judy Zangwill, the executive director of Sunnyside Community Services (SCS), at the 17th annual New York State Senate Women of Distinction Ceremony in Albany, on Tuesday, May 13. The ceremony provides Senators across New York State with an opportunity to honor outstanding women whose contributions to their neighborhood have enriched the lives of those in the community. LaGuardia Student Awarded For Her Entrepreneurship A nonprofit microlender presented LaGuardia Community College student Nadira El Khang with the Award for Integrity at its second annual Access to Opportunity Awards Luncheon on Thursday, Apr., 15. Accion East, a microfinance lender presented Nadira El Khang, owner of the handmade leather bag company NadiraBag, with the award for her unwavering dedication to her Moroccan roots and her embodiment of the entrepreneurial spirit that her father’s example instilled in her at a young age. El Khang is a self-taught artist from Morocco who grew up fixing vintage leather bags in her father’s store in Marrakesh. Over time, she developed a passion for designing and fabricating her own leather bags for family and friends. In April 2009, she moved to New York to challenge herself and pursue an education in accounting at LaGuardia Community College. While she remained committed to her educational goals, El Kang continued to pay tribute to her Moroccan heritage by crafting leather bags as a hobby. After she decided to turn her passion into profit, she opened a shop on the online retailer Etsy in November 2011––and started selling to rave reviews. “I took advantage of being in a country where people welcome ideas and push me … to dream
