BUST BUSHWICK BEATERS Say Pair Allegedly Assaulted Transgender Woman In Bias Crime by Robert Pozarycki Grand jurors in Brooklyn indicted two men on hate crime charges for allegedly attacking and seriously injuring a transgender woman on a Bushwick street last October, law enforcement officials announced last Thursday, Feb. 5. Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson identified them as Brownsville’s Mashawn Sonds, 25, of Hegeman Avenue and East New York’s Tyquan Eversley, 17, of Bradford Street. Members of the NYPD Hate Crimes Squad took Sonds into custody last Tuesday, Feb. 3, while Eversley was originally apprehended on criminal complaint charges on Dec. 26, 2014, and remains in jail. Both were indicted on charges of first- and second-degree assault as a hate crime, first- and second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing and menacing as a hate crime. Sonds was arraigned on the indictment last Wednesday, Feb. 4, in Brooklyn Criminal Court and ordered held on $250,000 bail; he is scheduled to return to court on Mar. 25. Eversley, meanwhile, is scheduled to be arraigned on Feb. 17 on the indictment. Thompson stated that Sonds and Eversley allegedly shouted homophobic slurs at the 28-year-old transgender woman before attacking her on the evening of Oct. 12, 2014 in the area of Bushwick Avenue and Halsey Street. The victim sustained a traumatic brain injury that will likely affect her for the rest of her life, the district attorney noted. “This was a cowardly, unprovoked and exceptionally vicious attack on an innocent person who was targeted for her appearance,” Thompson said in a statement last Thursday. “I must emphasize that hate crimes in any form—be they an attack on a person’s race, gender, sexuality or ethnicity—won’t be tolerated.” Police said Sonds and Eversley spotted the woman and a gay male friend walking through the area on Oct. 12, 2014 and began shouting various slurs at them. Seconds later, authorities stated, Eversley allegedly picked up a nearby full garbage bag, struck the woman in the head; he punched and kicked her about the body after she fell to the ground as Sonds and two unapprehended, unidentified individuals shouted homophobic remarks. Reportedly, Sonds grabbed a nearby plexiglass panel and swung it at the woman as she tried to flee. Police said he then allegedly hurled the panel at her, striking her in the head and knocking her unconscious. The group then fled the scene in an unknown direction, authorities stated. Officers from the 83rd Precinct and EMS units responded to the location. Paramedics rushed the victim to Elmhurst Hospital Center for treatment of her injuries. Det. Michael Diaz of the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force conducted the investigation. Asistant District Attorney Jonathan Hallet of the DA’s Civil Rights Bureau is prosecuting the case. The two men pictured above, identified as Mashawn Sonds (top) and Tyquan Eversley, were picked up recently for allegedly attacking a 28-year-old transgender woman in an apparent hate crime in Bushwick last October.
